Caffeine Sodium Benzoate for Electroconvulsive Therapy Augmentation
The Journal of ECT, 2018Objectives Because of an ongoing manufacturer shortage of injectable caffeine sodium benzoate (CSB), patients at our health system were given CSB compounded in-house to increase seizure response during electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate its effectiveness and safety as an ECT augmentation agent.

To the Editor:— With the increasing use of the synthesis of hippuric acid as a test of liver function, the toxicity of sodium benzoate requires careful revaluation. Recently Kinsey and Wright ( J. Lab. & Clin. Med. 29 :188 [Feb.] 1944) reported that, after a patient recovering from a serious attack of hepatitis had taken the usual dose of 6 Gm.

Sodium Benzoate and Benzoic Acid
2005Benzoic acid is found naturally in a wide variety of plants. It was isolated in the sixteenth century, but not commercially produced until the end of the nineteenth century. Researchers discovered in 1875 that this compound had potent antifungal properties, was relatively tasteless in foods, easy to make, and inexpensive.
