Microrobot actuated by soft actuators based on dielectric elastomer
IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and System, 2003In this paper a microrobot, mimicking annelid animals like the earthworm, is presented. The robot is composed of several ring-like segments. Each segment is able to generate three degree-of-freedom motions such as pan/tilt/up-down respectively, and it is actuated by three soft actuators located equidistantly along the circumferential direction.

Soft Actuators for Small‐Scale Robotics
Advanced Materials, 2016This review comprises a detailed survey of ongoing methodologies for soft actuators, highlighting approaches suitable for nanometer‐ to centimeter‐scale robotic applications. Soft robots present a special design challenge in that their actuation and sensing mechanisms are often highly integrated with the robot body and overall functionality.
