This study shows that superalloys used in aircraft engine disks become much more prone to deformation at high temperatures if they have been strained during manufacturing. This effect increases with the level of prior strain but eventually reaches a limit.

The traditional techniques employed for embedding plant samples are not suitable for the proper processing of small seeds with hard seed coats. Usually, these seeds are broken off from blocks during microtomy, which limits the technical success of this ...

Development of Unconventional Fabric from Banana (Musa Acuminata) Fibre for Industrial Uses
Banana fiber is a lingo-cellulosic under-exploited bast fiber, which obtained from the pseudo-stem of banana plant (Musa acuminata). In this study, an attempt has been made to explore the possibility of production of needle-punched nonwoven from fibrous ...

Composite Ti–6Al–4V–epoxy lattice structures are additively manufactured and epoxy infiltrated for cyclic loading. At low lattice volume fractions, hybridization produces synergistic gains in stiffness and energy dissipation. At higher volume fractions, synergy diminishes, although composites still exceed metallic lattices in specific energy ...

Acoustic characteristics of velar stops and velar softening in German, Polish and Catalan
Two hypotheses have been proposed in order to account for velar softening, i.e., a process through which /k/ changes to an affricate. Whereas one hypothesis states that for the process to apply the velar stop has to be realized as an (alveolo) palatal ...

Influence of Geometric Design on Mechanical Performance of Auxetic Metastructure
Strategic geometric reinforcement transforms auxetic performance. This study evaluates 3D‐printed arrowhead metastructures, revealing that a modified design with local ring reinforcement suppresses premature failure to achieve superior energy absorption and structural efficiency.

Strategies to Approach Stabilized Plasticity in Metals with Diminutive Volume: A Brief Review
Micrometer- or submicrometer-sized metallic pillars are widely studied by investigators worldwide, not only to provide insights into fundamental phenomena, but also to explore potential applications in microelectromechanical system (MEMS) devices.

Softening the naturalness problem [PDF]
It was observed by Veltman a long time ago that a special value for the Higgs boson mass could lead to a cancellation of the quadratically divergent corrections to the Higgs boson's squared mass which appear at one loop. We present a class of low energy models that allow to soften the naturalness problem in the sense that there can be a cancellation of

Embedded discontinuities for softening solids
Additional, discontinuous functions are added to the displacement field of standard finite elements in order to capture highly localised zones of intense straining.
