Solar Magnetic Fields

2003
The proximity of the Sun allows us to make detailed measurements on the properties of solar magnetic fields. The long term systematic changes in the solar magnetic field pattern indicate a global origin. A global dynamo can be sustained by the interaction of solar convection with solar rotation.

The Solar Magnetic Field and the Solar Activity

1965
The Sun has a mass of 2 × 1033 g, a radius of 7 × 1010 cm, a luminosity of 3.6 × 1033 ergs sec-1. The internal structure of the Sun is determined by the equation of hydrostatic equilibrium, the equation of transfer of energy and the equation of energy generation by thermonuclear reactions.

Generation of Solar Magnetic Fields I

1983
In this lecture we continue our discussion concerning the generation of magnetic fields from the motion of conducting fluids. We proposed the “short sudden” idealization, which led to equation (17) in the preceding lecture. Vj in that equation is the large scale, steady fluid velocity that continually shears the field.

Magnetic Fields in the Solar Corona

Nature, 1967
IT has been proposed by Sturrock1 that the frequency splitting sometimes observed in type II solar radio bursts may be caused by excitation of plasma oscillations by supra-thermal electrons moving through the solar corona in the presence of density irregularities and a weak magnetic field. He showed that in these circumstances electromagnetic waves may

Studies of solar magnetic fields

Solar Physics, 1977
An estimate of the average magnetic field strength at the poles of the Sun from Mount Wilson measurements is made by comparing low latitude magnetic measurements in the same regions made near the center of the disk and near the limb. There is still some uncertainty because the orientation angle of the field lines in the meridional plane is unknown, but

Measurement of solar magnetic fields

Annual Meeting Optical Society of America, 1988
We review the use of polarimetric techniques in measurements of the magnetic field in the sun’s atmosphere. The basic principles of the inverse Zeeman effect and the radiative transfer of polarized light are presented to demonstrate how the vector magnetic field on the sun can be determined in magnitude and direction from measurements of the Stokes ...

Solar Magnetic Fields Study.

1977
Abstract : This report describes a series of observations of solar magnetic fields. These observations were made using narrow band filters and active seeing correction systems developed at the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratories. New data has been obtained concerning the strength and size of solar magnetic field elements, and which set an upper ...

Magnetic Fields of the Solar System

1994
In the preceding four chapters we have presented a comprehensive and overall description of the solar magnetic field. This chapter will be devoted to the magnetic fields of the other celestial bodies in the solar system as well as of interplanetary space.
