Prokaryotic diversity of a Tunisian multipond solar saltern
Extremophiles, 200816S rRNA gene clone libraries were separately constructed from three ponds with different salt concentrations, M2 (15%), TS38 (25%) and S5 (32%), located within a multipond solar saltern of Sfax. The 16S rRNA genes from 216 bacterial clones and 156 archaeal clones were sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed.

Haloarchaeal communities in the crystallizers of two adriatic solar salterns
Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 2007Solar salterns operate only for short dry periods of the year in the north shore of the Adriatic Sea because of its relatively humid and cold Mediterranean climate. In a previous paper, we showed that the NaCl precipitation ponds (crystallizers) of Northern Adriatic Sečovlje salterns have different haloarchaeal populations from those typically found in

Comparative metabolic diversity in two solar salterns
Hydrobiologia, 2001The purpose of this study was to compare the metabolic diversity of the whole microbial community in an oligotrophic saltern (Eilat, Israel) and in a saltern with a more enriched source water (Newark, California). Between 1993 and 1998 water samples were taken from selected locations within the solar salterns of the Cargill Solar Salt Plant, Newark ...

Salinisphaera orenii sp. nov., isolated from a solar saltern
International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 2012A taxonomic study was performed on two isolates, designated strains MK-B5Tand MK-B7, isolated from sediment of a solar saltern pond in Gomso Bay, Republic of Korea. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strains MK-B5Tand MK-B7 belong to theGammaproteobacteriaand are related most closely toSalinisphaera shabanensisJCM 11575T( = E1L3AT)

Virioplankton community structure along a salinity gradient in a solar saltern
Extremophiles, 2003The virioplankton community structure along a salinity gradient from near seawater (40 per thousand ) to saturated sodium chloride brine (370 per thousand ) in a solar saltern was investigated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Viral populations with genome sizes varying from 10 kb to 533 kb were detected.

Natronomonas gomsonensis sp. nov., isolated from a solar saltern
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, 2013A halophilic archaeal strain, SA3(T), was isolated from sediment of a solar saltern in Gomso Bay, Republic of Korea. Cells of strain SA3(T) were observed to be coccoid-shaped, to lyse in distilled water, Gram stain-negative and to form red-pigmented colonies. Strain SA3(T) was found to require at least 18 % (w/v) NaCl for growth.

Echinicola jeungdonensis sp. nov., isolated from a solar saltern
International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 2011A non-motile and yellow-pigmented bacterium, designated strain HMD3054T, was isolated from a solar saltern in Jeungdo, Republic of Korea. The major fatty acids of strain HMD3054T were iso-C15 : 0 (31.4 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (23.5 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (14.2 %), summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c; 6.9 %) and summed feature 9 ...
