Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

The Source Domain of Fauna in Metaphoric Representation of Transport Terms [PDF]

open access: yes
1970’s of the previous century have introduced the shift in comprehension and study of figurative language, and in metaphor in particular. The theory of domains first dwelled upon in the researches of Langacker (1987) has been given substantial ...

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Conserved binding mode but diverse interfaces of MreC‐PBP2 interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of abMreC reveals a conserved two β‐barrel architecture and provides structural insights into its role within the bacterial elongasome. The abMreC–abPBP2 complex model identifies the molecular basis of MreC‐mediated PBP2 recognition, contributing to the regulation of peptidoglycan synthesis.

On the Metaphorics of Sweets and Meats

open access: yesStyles of Communication, 2016
This paper is aimed to be a contribution to the study of foodsemy, that is one of the recently much studied subtypes of metaphorical transfer where the source category are lexical items related to the category FOODSTUUFS while the target domain is the ...
