Abstract Temporal variation in abundance of spat of the blacklip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) was determined over an eight-year period at two sites, Gizo and Noro, in the Western Province of Solomon Islands. Spat were collected by deploying shade mesh substrata at a depth of 3 m for near-sequential two-month period.

Japanese oysters spatfields were recently discovered in the French Mediterranean Thau lagoon farmed for shellfish. This discovery led to interesting issues concerning research for a highly seashell exploited ecosystem. The analyses of various environmental parameters characterized favorable sites and periods for spat collection. Spat collection in Thau

This paper reports on three experiments in which artificial substrates were assessed for the collection of hatchery-reared silver-lip (or gold-lip) pearl oyster, Pinctada maxima (Jameson), spat. In the first experiment, pediveliger larvae were settled onto collectors made from a variety of materials: curved PVC slats; polypropylene rope; a combination ...

Abstract A European oyster population (Ostrea edulis) was recently discovered off the Eastern coast of Canada. The occurrence of this population led various aquaculture stakeholders to consider this species commercially. The aim of this study is to determine the best time to collect the European oyster larvae to maximize their collection.

Reviews in Aquaculture, 2022
AbstractPen shells hold some potential for cultivation, but information on aquaculture activities is fragmentary, and no sustained or commercial production of any such species is currently in place. We reviewed information available worldwide on reproductive cycles, wild juvenile collection, spat production in hatcheries and cultivation systems for 45 ...

Abstract Spat settlement (spat density, recruitment, and mortality) of edible oysters Crassostrea spp. was estimated for three sites (Nunia Chara [NC], Chowfoldandy [CD], and Sonadia Island [SI]) located along the Cox’s Bazar coast of Bangladesh from February 2019 to January 2020 by deploying shellstrings.

Abstract The single and combined effects of external bag size and external bag mesh size upon the collection and retention of wild King Scallop spat ( Pecten maximus L.), other scallop species ( Aequipecten opercularis ) and other animal groups were investigated in a collection area off the west coast of Scotland.

Pectinid fisheries, spat collection, and the potential for stock enhancement in the Isle of Man
1991Pectinids form the most valuable fishery on the Isle of Man. The state of the scallop and queen fishery is reviewed. On heavily fished inshore grounds, scallop population structures have been markedly shifted over the 52 years of exploitation and 70% of the catch is now undersize (<110-mm shell length).

Methods of Collecting Oyster Spat
Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, 1940Abstract An important phase of the program for the rehabilitation of the once prosperous oyster industry of California has been the development of more efficient collectors for taking natural larvae to be reared on artificial beds. Two exceptionally efficient types of collectors were developed. Their increased efficiency was due to the fact that larvae
