Abstract A spin-label assay for lysozyme, which is based on the enzymatic hydrolysis of spin-labeled peptidoglycan, is described. Hydrolysis of this polymer by lysozyme results in sharpening of the esr spectrum. The rate of spectral sharpening is a function of enzyme concentration. When the activities of hen egg-white and human lysozymes are compared

Electron Spin Resonance: Spin Labels
1981In general biological membranes possess no intrinsic paramagnetism and hence in the unlabeled state do not give rise to an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum. The introduction of a stable free radical (“spin label”) thus enables one to use ESR spectroscopy to study specific environments within the membrane.

Spin-label studies of tropomyosin
Biochemistry, 1975Studies are reported on nitroxide spin-labeled tropomyosin. The labels attach to sulfhydryl groups and to amino groups. The amino spins are highly mobile, the sulfhydryl much less so. Spin count studies show an average of approximately 0.5 labeled sulfhydryl/tropomyosin molecule and only approximately 0.15 labeled amino group/molecule.

Spin Labeling of Potassium Channels
2015Potassium channels are the ion channels most extensively studied by structural techniques. Whereas high-resolution crystal structures have provided key insights into the molecular architecture of these channels, spin labeling studies have helped to unveil the dynamic structural aspects underlying their function.

Spin-labelled Au nanoparticles
Faraday Discussions, 2004A series of Au nanoparticles functionalised with nitroxide spin labels has been prepared and studied by EPR spectroscopy. Samples with low coverage of the spin label were used to investigate the dynamics of the surface-attached labels at different distances from the Au surface. The rotational correlation times of spin labels vary from 10(-10) s to more

Thrombosis Research, 1976
Abstract Human platelets were labelled with a variety of lipophilic and thiol reagent spin probes. Aggregation was not affected by the lipid probes but was blocked by the covalent protein-directed probes. ESR spectra before and after thrombin treatment indicated that lipid structure of the platelet membrane was not affected to any measurable extent ...

Physics and chemistry of spin labels
Quarterly Reviews of Biophysics, 1970Biological systems provide the physical chemist with an abundance of interesting, challenging and significant problems. One example is the problem of the molecular basis of co-operative or allosteric interactions between distant ligand or substrate binding sites in hemoglobin and in enzymes.

The compound 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-[β-N-ethyleneiminopropionyl] oxypiperidine-I-oxyl is used as a spin-label for RNA. The reaction, effected under rather mild conditions, results in 50–70 nucleotides per spin-label. The temperature dependence of the ESR spectra of spin-labeled RNA is used to estimate temperatures corresponding to the beginning of ...

Spin-labeling of immunoglobulin carbohydrates
Immunochemistry, 1978Abstract The oligosaccharide units of different immunoglobulins were spin-labeled after periodate oxidation. Electron spin resonance spectra of the spin-labeled immunoglobulins point out on the marked freedom of rotation of bound spin-label. Addition of antigen to the spin-labeled anti-human IgG antibodies does not result in any change of spectra.
