Bud14 function is crucial for spindle pole body size maintenance. [PDF]

open access: diamondTurk J Biol
Spindle pole bodies (SPB), the functional equivalent of centrosomes in yeast, duplicate through generation of a new SPB next to the old one. However, SPBs are dynamic structures that can grow and exchange, and mechanisms that regulate SPB size remain largely unknown.

Spindle pole bodies [PDF]

open access: bronzeCurrent Biology, 2013
What is a spindle pole body? The spindle pole body (SPB) or duplication plaque of fungi is the functional equivalent of the centrosome in higher eukaryotes. SPBs serve as microtubule organizing centres (MTOCs), sites where microtubules (MTs) are assembled from tubulin subunits. In contrast to centrosomes, SPBs do not contain centrioles.

Role of spindle pole body component 25 in neurodegeneration. [PDF]

open access: yesAnn Transl Med, 2021
Aberrant growth and polarization of microglia are critical for pathological initiation and progression of neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the molecular signals that govern the outgrowth of microglia have not yet been fully determined.

Fission yeast cells undergo nuclear division in the absence of spindle microtubules. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2010
Mitosis in eukaryotic cells employs spindle microtubules to drive accurate chromosome segregation at cell division. Cells lacking spindle microtubules arrest in mitosis due to a spindle checkpoint that delays mitotic progression until all chromosomes ...

Yeast Kinesin-5 Motor Protein CIN8 Promotes Accurate Chromosome Segregation

open access: yesCells, 2022
Accurate chromosome segregation depends on bipolar chromosome–microtubule attachment and tension generation on chromosomes. Incorrect chromosome attachment results in chromosome missegregation, which contributes to genome instability.

Cosegregation of asymmetric features during cell division

open access: yesOpen Biology, 2021
Cellular asymmetry plays a major role in the ageing and evolution of multicellular organisms. However, it remains unknown how the cell distinguishes ‘old’ from ‘new’ and whether asymmetry is an attribute of highly specialized cells or a feature inherent ...

The N-Terminal Domain of Bfa1 Coordinates Mitotic Exit Independent of GAP Activity in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

open access: yesCells, 2022
The spindle position checkpoint (SPOC) of budding yeast delays mitotic exit in response to misaligned spindles to ensure cell survival and the maintenance of genomic stability.

Coordination of chromatid separation and spindle elongation by antagonistic activities of mitotic and S-phase CDKs. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2013
Because cohesion prevents sister-chromatid separation and spindle elongation, cohesion dissolution may trigger these two events simultaneously. However, the relatively normal spindle elongation kinetics in yeast cohesin mutants indicates an additional ...
