Energy Transfer Through Food Webs at Hydrothermal Vents: Linking the Lithosphere to the Biosphere [PDF]

open access: yesOceanography, 2012
Tectonic and volcanic processes that drive hydrothermal fluid flow and influence its chemistry also regulate the transfer of energy to hydrothermal vent ecosystems.

Time crystals in periodically driven systems

open access: yes, 2018
When the discrete time-translation symmetry of isolated, periodically driven systems is spontaneously broken, a new phase of matter can emerge. We review some recent developments on both the theoretical underpinnings and experimental realizations of time

Cytoplasmic p21 promotes stemness of colon cancer cells via activation of the NFκB pathway

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytoplasmic p21 promotes colorectal cancer stem cell (CSC) features by destabilizing the NFκB–IκB complex, activating NFκB signaling, and upregulating BCL‐xL and COX2. In contrast to nuclear p21, cytoplasmic p21 enhances spheroid formation and stemness transcription factor CD133.

Oceanic structures of the Earth and the North Depression of Mars: A comparison of the formation mechanisms [PDF]

open access: yes
The system of contemporary oceans on Earth and the North Depression of Mars are quasi-symmetrical in reference to the centers of of the hemispheres. Both systems had been formed over the common megacycle of evolution of planets and their origin is likely

Perspectives in educating molecular pathologists on liquid biopsy: Toward integrative, equitable, and decentralized precision oncology

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Liquid biopsy enables minimally invasive, real‐time molecular profiling through analysis of circulating biomarkers in biological fluids. This Perspective highlights the importance of training pathologists through integrative educational programs, such as the European Masters in Molecular Pathology, to ensure effective and equitable implementation of ...

Towards a Realistic Model for Failure Propagation in Interdependent Networks

open access: yes, 2015
Modern networks are becoming increasingly interdependent. As a prominent example, the smart grid is an electrical grid controlled through a communications network, which in turn is powered by the electrical grid.

Monitoring of circulating tumor DNA allows early detection of disease relapse in patients with operable breast cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Monitoring circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in patients with operable breast cancer can reveal disease relapse earlier than radiology in a subset of patients. The failure to detect ctDNA in some patients with recurrent disease suggests that ctDNA could serve as a supplement to other monitoring approaches.

Seismic velocity structure of the Juan de Fuca and Gorda plates revealed by a joint inversion of ambient noise and regional earthquakes

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
The crust and upper mantle seismic structure, spanning from the Juan de Fuca and Gorda spreading centers to the Cascade back arc, is imaged with full‐wave propagation simulation and a joint inversion of ambient noise and regional earthquake recordings ...
