Large-conductance Ca2+-activated potassium channels are potently involved in the inverse neurovascular response to spreading depolarization

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2018
Recurrent spreading depolarizations occur in the cerebral cortex from minutes up to weeks following acute brain injury. Clinical evidence suggests that the immediate reduction of cerebral blood flow in response to spreading depolarization importantly ...

Migraine Aura—Catch Me If You Can with EEG and MRI—A Narrative Review

open access: yesDiagnostics, 2023
Roughly one-third of migraine patients suffer from migraine with aura, characterized by transient focal neurological symptoms or signs such as visual disturbance, sensory abnormalities, speech problems, or paresis in association with the headache attack.

Embedded Ferroelectric Nanoclusters Can Drive Polarization Reversal in a Non‐Ferroelectric Polar Film via the Proximity Effect

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ferroelectric nanoclusters create local internal fields in a normally non‐switchable polar film because of polarization mismatch at their interfaces. That field opposes polarization in the regions with larger polarization and reinforces polarization in the regions with smaller polarization.

Depolarization increases cellular light transmission [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Application of optical methods to human brain tissue in vivo, e.g., measuring oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin concentration changes with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), requires the a priori assumption that background optical properties remain ...

Strong Lead‐Free Bioinspired Piezoceramics for Durable Energy Transducers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We fabricated brick‐and‐mortar lead‐free piezoceramics with Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 monocrystal platelets as bricks and amorphous silica as mortar. The alignment of the bricks and the presence of the amorphous silica led to anisotropic residual stresses. These residual stresses increase the samples toughness, strength and durability while the brick alignment ...

Voltage-induced spreading and superspreading of liquids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The ability to quickly spread a liquid across a surface and form a film is fundamental for a diverse range of technological processes, including printing, painting and spraying.

Cellular and network mechanisms of spreading depolarization

open access: yesAdvances in Physiology Education
Spreading depolarization (SD) denotes a slowly propagating wave of ionic redistribution resulting in neuronal and glial depolarization, cellular swelling, vascular alterations, and metabolic challenge.

Bio‐Inspired Artificial Ionic Mechanoreceptor

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A skin‐inspired artificial mechanoreceptor based on ionic interactions is presented for biomimetic tactile sensing. Pressure‐driven ionic redistribution within microfluidic channels generates a self‐powered electrical signal without external bias. The generated waveform exhibits mechanoreceptor‐like temporal features, including overshoot and undershoot,

The Hemodynamic Response of Spreading Depolarization Observed by Near Infrared Spectroscopy After Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Background: Electrocorticography (ECoG) in brain-injured patients allows to detect spreading depolarization, a potential mechanism of secondary ischemia. Here, we describe the relationship of spreading depolarization with changes in cerebral hemodynamics

Protein‐Nanoarchitectures for Low‐Field Intracellular Electro‐Immunomodulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
DHQ‐SDH‐mediated binding of AuNPs drives the formation of interconnected, chain‐like nanoarchitectures with enhanced electrical conductivity. These conductive assemblies undergo macrophage uptake and enable low‐field electrical stimulation, promoting M1‐to‐M2 phenotypic switching with decreased iNOS and increased CD206 expression. Such protein‐mediated
