Distinct Functions of STARCH SYNTHASE 4 Domains in Starch Granule Formation [PDF]
The formation of normal starch granules in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) leaf chloroplasts requires STARCH SYNTHASE 4 (SS4). In plants lacking SS4, chloroplasts typically produce only one round granule rather than multiple lenticular granules. The mechanisms by which SS4 determines granule number and morphology are not understood.

Solubilization of the Starch-Granule-Bound Starch Synthase of Normal Maize Kernels [PDF]
The starch-granule-bound starch synthase from Zea mays has been solubilized with a recovery of between 50 and 84%. Chromatography of the solubilized enzyme on DEAE-Sepharose resolves two fractions of activity which may be distinguished by their response to citrate. Neither solubilized isoenzyme displays any significant activity with UDPglucose.

Functional Analysis of Starch Metabolism in Plants
In plants, starch is synthesized in leaves during the day-time from fixed carbon through photosynthesis and is mobilized at night to support continued respiration, sucrose export, and growth in the dark.

Analysis of Starch Synthase Activities in Wheat Grains using Native-PAGE
Starch synthases are one class of key enzymes involving in the synthesis of cereal starch, which transfer glucose from ADP-glucose to the non-reducing end of pre-existing α-(1-4)-liked glucosyl chains of amylopectin.

Potato starch synthases: Functions and relationships
Starch, a very compact form of glucose units, is the most abundant form of storage polyglucan in nature. The starch synthesis pathway is among the central biochemical pathways, however, our understanding of this important pathway regarding genetic elements controlling this pathway, is still insufficient.

Development of a model for granule-bound starch synthase I activity using free-energy calculations
Starch is a branched polymer of glucose with two components, both of which have (1 → 4)-α linear links and (1 → 6)-α branch points: amylopectin, of high molecular weight with many short branches, and amylose, of lower molecular weight and only a few long-

STARCH SYNTHASE 4 is required for normal starch granule initiation in amyloplasts of wheat endosperm [PDF]
Summary Starch granule initiation is poorly understood at the molecular level. The glucosyltransferase, STARCH SYNTHASE 4 (SS4), plays a central role in granule initiation in Arabidopsis leaves, but its function in cereal endosperms is unknown.
