Spring and Power in Hovering Ornithopters

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Only small ornithopters can hover, longest at the hummingbird size. This article reviews the drive and power of these hovering machines, focusing on elastic energy and thrust boosters. Unlike two‐winged designs, X‐winged and multiple‐V‐winged ornithopters benefit from lower disk loading and slower, smaller wingbeats, and the clap‐and‐fling effect ...

Stellar kinematics in 30 Doradus

open access: yes, 2001

zoomies: A Tool to Infer Stellar Age from Vertical Action in Gaia Data

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Stellar age measurements are fundamental to understanding a wide range of astronomical processes, including Galactic dynamics, stellar evolution, and planetary system formation. However, extracting age information from main-sequence stars is complicated,

Morphy: A Compliant and Morphologically Aware Flying Robot

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This study presents Morphy, a 25.2 cm‐wide, 260 g aerial robot with flexible, sensorized joints that enable it to withstand high‐speed collisions and squeeze through narrow spaces. Powered by an adaptive control scheme exploiting real‐time morphology feedback, Morphy demonstrates resilience in trajectory tracking, collision, and impact recovery and ...

When was the Large Magellanic Cloud accreted onto the Galaxy ?

open access: yes, 2011
Using fully self-consistent N-body models for the dynamical evolution of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the Galaxy, we show that if the LMC initially has an extended old stellar halo before its commencement of tidal interaction with the Galaxy ...

Motion Capture and Augmented‐Reality‐Assisted Surface Reconstruction and Robotic Remanufacturing System

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
An virtual reality augmented‐reality‐ and motion‐capture‐assisted surface remanufacturing system is presented. Operators can interactively reconstruct the virtual model using the designed motion‐captured pointer directly on the physical workpiece surface. Operators can intuitively and interactively manipulate the system to accomplish tasks ranging from

The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey. XII. Stellar Populations and Kinematics of Compact, Low-Mass Early-Type Galaxies from Gemini GMOS-IFU Spectroscopy

open access: yes, 2015
We present Gemini GMOS-IFU data of eight compact low-mass early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the Virgo cluster. We analyse their stellar kinematics, stellar population, and present two-dimensional maps of these properties covering the central 5"x 7" region ...
