In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

The Local Stellar Initial Mass Function

open access: yes, 2000
This contribution describes the difficult task of inferring the IMF from local star-count data, by discussing the mass-luminosity relation, unresolved binary, triple and quadruple systems, abundance and age spreads and Galactic structure, all of which must be accounted for properly for the results to be meaningful.

Constraining the Initial Mass Function via Stellar Transients

open access: yesUniverse
The stellar initial mass function (IMF) represents a fundamental quantity in astrophysics and cosmology describing the mass distribution of stars from low mass all the way up to massive and very massive stars. It is intimately linked to a wide variety of topics, including stellar and binary evolution, galaxy evolution, chemical enrichment, and ...

Towards understanding the stellar initial mass function [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1992
It is suggested that the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is closely related to the geometrical structure of star-forming clouds, and that the power-law form of the upper IMF results from accretion processes in hierarchical groupings of forming stars.

Luminosity functions and initial mass function variations from large samples of H II regions and molecular clouds

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Large high-quality samples of HII regions and their parent giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are now available for local galaxies. It is therefore possible to investigate the links between the CO and Hα luminosity functions and whether massive stars form in ...

Galaxy Populations in Groups and Clusters: Evidence for a Characteristic Stellar Mass Scale at M ∗ ∼ 109.5 M ⊙

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We use the DR9 of the DESI legacy imaging survey and SDSS galaxy groups to measure the conditional luminosity function (CLF) for groups with halo mass M _h ≥ 10 ^12 M _⊙ and redshift 0.01 ≤ z ≤ 0.08, down to a limiting r -band magnitude of M _r = −10 to −

Modelling galaxy stellar mass evolution from z~0.8 to today

open access: yes, 2009
We apply the empirical method built for z=0 in the previous work of Wang et al. to a higher redshift, to link galaxy stellar mass directly with its hosting dark matter halo mass at z~0.8.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).
