Impact of matrix stiffness on fibroblast function

Materials Science and Engineering: C, 2017
Chronic non-healing wounds, caused by impaired production of growth factors and reduced vascularization, represent a significant burden to patients, health care professionals, and health care system. While several wound dressing biomaterials have been developed, the impact of the mechanical properties of the dressings on the residing cells and ...

Matrix Stiffness: the Conductor of Organ Fibrosis

Current Rheumatology Reports, 2018
Organ fibrosis is a lethal component of scleroderma. The hallmark of scleroderma fibrosis is extensive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition by activated myofibroblasts, specialized hyper-contractile cells that promote ECM remodeling and matrix stiffening.

Stiffness Matrix of Compliant Parallel Mehanisms

Volume 2: 32nd Mechanisms and Robotics Conference, Parts A and B, 2008
Starting from the definition of a stiffness matrix, the authors present the Cartesian stiffness matrix of parallel compliant mechanisms. The proposed formulation is more general than any other stiffness matrix found in the literature since it can take into account the stiffness of the passive joints and remains valid for large displacements.

Affine connections for the Cartesian stiffness matrix

Proceedings of International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 2002
We study the 6/spl times/6 Cartesian stiffness matrix. We show that the stiffness of a rigid body subjected to conservative forces and moments is described by a (0,2) tensor which is the Hessian of the potential function. The key observation of the paper is that since the Hessian depends on the choice of an affine connection in the task space, so will ...

Matrix Stiffness Method

2009
Matrix stiffness method (MSM) is a modern powerful method of analysis of engineering structures. Its effective and widespread application is associated with availability of modern computers and effective computer programs. The MSM allows performing detail analysis of any sophisticated 2D and 3D engineering structure and takes into account different ...

Element Stiffness Matrix Generator

Journal of the Structural Division, 1971
This paper presents the basic concepts required to construct a computer code capable of deriving element stiffness matrices. The computer program requires only the displacement functions, transformation matrices, and a few control cards as input.

Extracellular Matrix Stiffness in Lung Health and Disease

Comprehensive Physiology, 2022
Abstract The extracellular matrix (ECM) provides structural support and imparts a wide variety of environmental cues to cells. In the past decade, a growing body of work revealed that the mechanical properties of the ECM, commonly known as matrix stiffness, regulate the fundamental cellular processes of the lung ...

The Stiffness Matrix

1997
This introduction to stiffness matrices will show how to derive the appropriate matrix connecting ‘force’ to ‘displacement’ for (i) a bar under uniaxial stressing, (ii) a beam in bending and (iii) a shaft under torsion, using the work of previous chapters.
