COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF STILBENE SYNTHASE GENES AMONG VITIS SPECIES

Acta Horticulturae, 2007
Stilbene synthase (StSy), encoded by a multigene family of several members, is the key enzyme to form resveratrol, the major component of the grapevine phytoalexin response. Genes encoding stilbene synthases have previously been described for several plant species including grapevine. Pierce's disease (PD), anthracnose and downy mildew are the limiting

Induction of stilbene synthase by Botrytis cinerea in cultured grapevine cells

Planta, 1991
The interaction between Botrytis cinerea Pers. and grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) was studied in a model system of reduced complexity. Cultured plant cells and fragments of fungal cell wall were used to simulate some of the processes taking place upon infection of grapevine with B. cinerea.

Localization of stilbene synthase in Vitis vinifera L. during berry development

Protoplasma, 2008
The localization of stilbene synthase (STS) (EC 2.3.1.95) in grape berry (Vitis vinifera L.) was investigated during fruit development. The berries were collected at 2, 4, 7, 11, and 15 weeks postflowering from the cultivar Nebbiolo during the 2005 and 2006 growing seasons. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis showed that berries accumulated

Characterization of a pine multigene family containing elicitor- responsive stilbene synthase genes

Plant Molecular Biology, 1999
Young pine seedlings respond to environmental stress by induced synthesis of pinosylvin, a stilbene phytoalexin. Heartwood of pine trees is characterized by a high content of pinosylvin. The formation of pinosylvin from cinnamoyl-CoA and three molecules malonyl-CoA catalysed by pinosylvin synthase is typical of the genus Pinus.

Differential responses of Scots pine stilbene synthase and chalcone synthase genes to Heterobasidion annosum infection

Forest Pathology, 2017
SummaryPhenolic compounds are essential components of the defensive chemical arsenal of conifer trees. This chemically diverse group encompasses stilbenoids, flavonoids, isoflavonoids, proanthocyanidins and lignans. All of them are produced from the common precursors, CoA esters of the phenylpropanoids: p‐coumaroyl‐CoA, cinnamoyl‐CoA, caffeoyl‐CoA and ...

Transfer of a grapevine stilbene synthase gene to rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Plant Cell Reports, 1997
A gene derived from grapevine (Vitis vinifera) coding for stilbene synthase has been transferred into protoplasts of the commercially important japonica rice cultivar Nipponbare using PEG-mediated direct gene transfer. Transgenic plants were regenerated from calli selected on kanamycin.

Evidence that stilbene synthases have developed from chalcone synthases several times in the course of evolution

Journal of Molecular Evolution, 1994
Chalcone (CHS) and stilbene (STS) synthases are related plant-specific polyketide synthases that are key enzymes in the biosynthesis of flavonoids and of stilbene phytoalexins, respectively. A phylogenetic tree constructed from 34 CHS and four STS sequences revealed that the STS formed no separate cluster but grouped with CHS from the same or related ...

A New Stilbene Synthase Gene from Muscadine (Vitis rotundifolia) Grape Berry

2007 Frontiers in the Convergence of Bioscience and Information Technologies, 2007
Muscadine grapes contain high concentration of polyphenols that are known to be involved in plant defense. Resveratrol encoded by stilbene synthase (STS) is one of the important phenolic compounds found in muscadine grape that has antimicrobial activity as well as health benefit.

Expression of a chimeric stilbene synthase gene in transgenic wheat lines

Transgenic Research, 1999
A chimeric stilbene synthase (sts)‐gene was transferred into wheat. Stilbene synthases play a role in the defence against fungal diseases in some plant species (e.g. groundnut or grapevine) by producing stilbene‐type phytoalexins like resveratrol. Resveratrol is also claimed to have positive effects to human health.

Stilbene content and expression of stilbene synthase genes in cell cultures of Vitis amurensis treated with cinnamic and caffeic acids

Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry, 2017
AbstractIt has previously been shown that exogenous application of p‐coumaric acid (CA), a precursor of phenolic compounds, improved stilbene production in cell cultures of Vitis amurensis. This study examines the effect of cinnamic (Cin) and caffeic (Caf) acids, which are also phenolic precursors, on stilbene biosynthesis in the cell cultures.
