Investigation of continuum damage mechanics model without element size sensitivity

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2017
A discontinuous material behavior such as ductile fracture and fatigue failure is predicted actively in various fields by FEM. There is continuum damage mechanics as a method to evaluate the discontinuous material behavior in a framework of continuum ...

Bayesian Estimation Improves Prediction of Outcomes After Epilepsy Surgery

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We estimated the statistical power of studies predicting seizure freedom after epilepsy surgery. We extracted data from a Cochrane meta‐analysis. The median power across all studies was 14%. Studies with a median sample size or less (n ≤ 56) and a statistically significant result exaggerated the true effect size by a factor of 5.4, while the ...

A Review on Heterogeneous Nanostructures: A Strategy for Superior Mechanical Properties in Metals

open access: yesMetals, 2019
Generally, strength and ductility are mutually exclusive in homogeneous metals. Nanostructured metals can have much higher strength when compared to their coarse-grained counterparts, while simple microstructure refinement to nanoscale generally results ...

Meningovascular Inflammation in Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy‐Related Cortical Superficial Siderosis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The role of inflammation in cortical superficial siderosis (cSS), a marker of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) linked to high hemorrhage risk, is unclear. We examined 15 patients with cSS using 3 T post‐contrast vessel wall MRI (VWI) and CSF analysis.

Strain-induced energy band gap opening in two-dimensional bilayered silicon film

open access: yes, 2015
This work presents a theoretical study of the structural and electronic properties of bilayered silicon films under in-plane biaxial strain/stress using density functional theory.

Clinical Outcomes of Patients Within the Rheumatoid Arthritis Care Pathway Cohort at a Tertiary Care Integrated Delivery Network: A Comparison to Usual Care

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective We aimed to compare clinical outcomes between patients in the Allegheny Health Network rheumatoid arthritis (RA) care pathway and patients receiving usual care. Methods The care pathway initiative implements guideline‐based best practice alongside multidisciplinary team‐based care.

Thermal rectifier from deformed carbon nanohorns

open access: yes, 2008
We study thermal rectification in single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWNHs) by using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) method. It is found that the horns with the bigger top angles show larger asymmetric heat transport due to the larger structural ...

Revisiting Stability Criteria in Ball‐Milled High‐Entropy Alloys: Do Hume–Rothery and Thermodynamic Rules Equally Apply?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
The stability criteria affecting the formation of high‐entropy alloys, particularly focusing in supersaturated solid solutions produced by mechanical alloying, are analyzed. Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.

Investigating Elastic Deformation of Ordered Precipitates by Ab Initio-Informed Phase-Field Crystal Modeling

open access: yesMetals
Ni-based superalloys, essential for high-temperature applications, derive strength from coherent second-order precipitates that impede dislocation motion through coherency misfit and elastic mismatch.

An effect of a purely dissipative process of microstresses on plane strain gradient plasticity problems [PDF]

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Mechanics, 2018
This article considers a plane strain gradient plasticity theory of the Gurtin–Anand model [M. Gurtin, L. Anand, A theory of strain gradient plasticity for isotropic, plastically irrotational materials Part I: Small deformations, J. Mech. Phys. Solids 53
