Optimising building structural topologies

open access: yes, 2014
A strategy to perform structural optimisation at early stages of the building design process has been developed. It uses a complete building spatial design as input to generate astructural topology.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Intelligent Structure Searching and Designs for Nanoclusters: Effective Units in Atomic Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems
Clusters, an aggregation of several to thousands of atoms, molecules, or ions, are the building blocks of novel functional materials by atomic manufacturing and exhibit excellent applications in catalysis, quantum information, and nanomedicine.

Phosphoinositides and inositol phosphates as molecular glues

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol phosphates (IPs) and phosphoinositides (PIPs) regulate diverse eukaryotic processes. Beyond recruiting signaling proteins or acting as structural cofactors, recent studies suggest they mediate protein–protein interactions as natural molecular glues.

Influence of Failure Strain of Different Aluminium Alloys on Dynamic Problems

open access: yesEngineering Transactions, 2014
In this work an experimental-numerical methodology is devised for analyzing ductile fracture of two aluminum alloys under different values of stress triaxiality (0.2 ≤ η ≤ 1.2) and Lode parameter (−1 ≤ μ ≤ 0).

Homogenisation approaches for structural analysis of masonry structures

open access: yes, 2006
Modern methodologies for the conservation of architectural heritage require structural analysis for the purpose of diagnosis and safety evaluation.

PARK(ing) time–How park deficiency affects the biological clock in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

Computational design and evaluation of the mechanical and electrical behavior of a piezoelectric scaffold: a preclinical study

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology
Piezoelectric scaffolds have been recently developed to explore their potential to enhance the bone regeneration process using the concept of piezoelectricity, which also inherently occurs in bone.

Structural dynamics teaching example: A linear test analysis case using open software

open access: yes, 2013
Teaching the topic of structural dynamics in any engineering field is a true challenge due to the wide span of the underlying subjects like mathematics, mechanics (both rigid body and continuum mechanics), numerical analysis, random data analysis and ...

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.
