Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Workspace and Singularity Analysis of 4-DOF 3R1T Parallel Mechanism with a Circular Rail

open access: yesRobotics
Limited workspace and singularities are major challenges for parallel mechanisms. This article addresses these issues for a 4-DOF 1-SPS/3-RRRRR parallel mechanism with a circular rail, proposed in our prior work. The mechanism has a 3R1T motion type with

Abstract Homotopy Theory and the Thomason Model structure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
There is a closed model structure on the category of small categories, called Thomason model structure, that is Quillen equivalent to the standard model structure on the category of topological spaces.

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Accelerated inverse design of broadband microperforated panel absorbers based on probabilistic generative model

open access: yesResults in Engineering
The inverse design of acoustic metamaterials for broadband sound absorption remains challenging due to the complex coupling dynamics and the ill-posed nature of mapping target absorption spectra to geometric parameters.

Structured learning modulo theories

open access: yesArtificial Intelligence, 2017
Modelling problems containing a mixture of Boolean and numerical variables is a long-standing interest of Artificial Intelligence. However, performing inference and learning in hybrid domains is a particularly daunting task. The ability to model this kind of domains is crucial in "learning to design" tasks, that is, learning applications where the goal

Operational theories as structural realism

open access: yesStudies in History and Philosophy of Science, 2022
We undertake a reconstruction of the epistemic significance of research on operational theories in quantum foundations. We suggest that the space of operational theories is analogous to the space of possible worlds employed in the possible world semantics for modal logic, so research of this sort can be understood as probing modal structure.
