Increased free water in the substantia nigra in idiopathic REM sleep behaviour disorder.

open access: yesBrain : a journal of neurology, 2021
Imaging markers sensitive to neurodegeneration in the substantia nigra are critically needed for future disease-modifying trials. Previous studies have demonstrated the utility of posterior substantia nigra free water as a marker of progression in ...

A single-cell atlas of the human substantia nigra reveals cell-specific pathways associated with neurological disorders

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
We describe a human single-nuclei transcriptomic atlas for the substantia nigra (SN), generated by sequencing approximately 17,000 nuclei from matched cortical and SN samples.

Crystals in the Substantia Nigra [PDF]

open access: yesACS Chemical Neuroscience, 2019
Crystals of TiO2 and CaO were detected in electron-beam exposed extracts of four substantia nigra specimens of Parkinson's disease donors. A likely precursor of the CaO crystals is inflammatory calcium oxalate dihydrate, decomposing according to CaC2O4·2H2O → CaO + CO↑ + CO2↑ + 2H2O↑.

Spatiotemporal changes in substantia nigra neuromelanin content in Parkinson's disease.

open access: yesBrain : a journal of neurology, 2020
This study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal changes in neuromelanin-sensitive MRI signal in the substantia nigra and their relation to clinical scores of disease severity in patients with early or progressing Parkinson's disease and patients with ...

Oxidative stress in the aging substantia nigra and the etiology of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesAging Cell, 2019
Parkinson's disease prevalence is rapidly increasing in an aging global population. With this increase comes exponentially rising social and economic costs, emphasizing the immediate need for effective disease‐modifying treatments.

Mitochondrial dysfunction within the synapses of substantia nigra neurons in Parkinson’s disease

open access: yesnpj Parkinson's Disease, 2018
Mitochondrial dysfunction within the cell bodies of substantia nigra neurons is prominent in both ageing and Parkinson’s disease. The loss of dopaminergic substantia nigra neurons in Parkinson’s disease is associated with loss of synapses within the ...

Comparative Study of MRI Biomarkers in the Substantia Nigra to Discriminate Idiopathic Parkinson Disease

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Neuroradiology, 2018
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Several new MR imaging techniques have shown promising results in patients with Parkinson disease; however, the comparative diagnostic values of these measures at the individual level remain unclear.

The cannabinoid-1 receptor is abundantly expressed in striatal striosomes and striosome-dendron bouquets of the substantia nigra

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Presynaptic cannabinoid-1 receptors (CB1-R) bind endogenous and exogenous cannabinoids to modulate neurotransmitter release. CB1-Rs are expressed throughout the basal ganglia, including striatum and substantia nigra, where they play a role in learning ...
