Effect of linseed supplementation of the gestation and lactation diets of dairy ewes on the growth performance and the intramuscular fatty acid composition of their lambs

open access: yesAnimal, 2015
In this study, we investigated the effects of maternal gestation and/or lactation diets supplemented with extruded linseed (rich in 18:3n-3) on growth performance and long-chain polyunsaturated faaty acid (PUFA) accumulation in muscle tissues of suckling

Progestagens Monitoring in 147 Mares in Order to Induce Foaling With Oxytocin

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 1, January 2026.
Parturition was induced when the progestagens concentration fell of about 50% within 24 to 48 h. Induction was performed at 9 p.m. in 93 mares that followed the rule of the drop of progestagens, by a single IM oxytocin injection from 10 to 50 UI according to the weight of the mare (120 to 900 kg).

Evaluation of Oral Supplementation of Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) on Growth Performance, Immune Response, Disease Incidence and Mortality Rate of Suckling Zaraibi Goat Kids

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 1, January 2026.
Black cumin seeds (Nigella sativa) supplementation in suckling Zaraibi goat kids enhanced growth performance, immune response, and health status while reducing mortality and disease incidence. This study highlights the potential of black cumin seeds to improve economic efficiency and sustainability in livestock farming, reducing the use of antibiotics.

Maternal behaviour and lamb survival: from neuroendocrinology to practical application*

open access: yesAnimal, 2014
Parental care promotes offspring survival and, for livestock species, this care is provided solely by the mother. Maternal behaviour in the sheep has been exceptionally well-studied compared with other species and many of the underpinning biological ...

Genetic Evaluation of Reproductive Traits of Ethiopian Sheep Breeds Under Community‐Based Breeding Programmes

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Volume 143, Issue 1, Page 105-118, January 2026.
ABSTRACT The evaluation of breeding schemes against established objectives and selection traits is essential for assessing the performance, outputs, and overall impacts of breeding programmes. In Ethiopia, most Community‐Based Breeding Programmes (CBBPs) have prioritised growth traits, particularly live weight, as the main selection criteria.

Influence of ewe feeding systems on carcass quality of suckling lambs

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2010
Numerous studies have evidenced significant differences in the carcass and meat quality of grass-fed and concentrate-fed lambs. The main differences regard carcass fatness (Murphy et al., 1994), subcutaneous fat colour (Prache and Theriez, 1999), meat ...
