Changes in waterbird occurrence and abundance at their northern range boundaries in response to climate warming: importance of site area and protection status

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
We investigated non‐breeding waterbird population changes in response to temperature, site area, site protection status, and land use in agricultural and urban surfaces, at cold distribution edge in Sweden. Temperature increase was a strong predictor of population increase, particularly for warm‐dwelling species.

Increased sugar consumption is a main driver of the increased prevalence of obesity and non‐communicable diseases (NCDs). Therefore, understanding host and microbial sugar metabolism and its metabolic effects is crucial. A high‐sugar diet can induce gut dysbiosis, and gut microbial sugar fermentation can produce deleterious metabolites, potentially ...

Using satellite tracking to assess the use of protected areas and alternative roosts by Whooper and Bewick's Swans

open access: yesIbis, Volume 167, Issue 2, Page 515-529, April 2025.
Protected areas are one of the major tools used in the conservation of biodiversity, but animals are unlikely always to remain within these human‐made boundaries. Understanding when and why species choose to leave protected areas can help us to improve the effectiveness of these management tools.
