Microbial Sulfite Respiration

2013
Despite its reactivity and hence toxicity to living cells, sulfite is readily converted by various microorganisms using distinct assimilatory and dissimilatory metabolic routes. In respiratory pathways, sulfite either serves as a primary electron donor or terminal electron acceptor (yielding sulfate or sulfide, respectively), and its conversion drives ...

Sulfite-treated lettuce challenges in sulfite-sensitive subjects with asthma

Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1989
This study was designed to determine whether lettuce treated with a commercially available sulfite-containing freshener prepared according to manufacturer's directions could provoke reactions in sulfite-sensitive subjects with asthma (SSAs). Five adult SSAs with stable asthma who had multiple prior reactions to double-blind, placebo-controlled, sulfite-

Isolation of sulfited oligosaccharides from glycoproteins treated with alkaline sulfite

Carbohydrate Research, 1984
The oligosaccharide products resulting from treatment of mucin-type glycoproteins with alkali in the presence of the sulfite anion have been investigated. Treatment of fetuin and of tryptic glycopeptides from the human erythrocyte with this reagent resulted in the release of sulfited oligosaccharides identified as N-acetylsulfohexosamine (HexNAcSO3 ...

Traveling Waves in the Iodate-Sulfite and Bromate-Sulfite Systems

The Journal of Physical Chemistry, 1995
We investigated traveling fronts of the oxidation of sulfite by iodate and by bromate. Isothermal density changes (A@,) and enthalpies were determined, the latter being negative in both cases. The Ae, is negative in the iodate-sulfite system but positive in the bromate-sulfite system.
