Superoxide interaction with nickel and iron superoxide dismutases
Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modelling, 2009Interaction of superoxide with the metal active sites of nickel and iron-containing superoxide dismutases is investigated with density functional theory. Outer-sphere mechanisms for both the reduction and oxidation of superoxide are proposed to be the common feature of these structurally unrelated SODs.

Superoxide Dismutase-Based Third-Generation Biosensor for Superoxide Anion
Analytical Chemistry, 2002A third-generation biosensor for superoxide anion (O2-) was developed by immobilizing superoxide dismutase (SOD) on a self-assembled monolayer of cysteine on gold electrode; i.e., a SOD/cysteine-modified gold electrode (SOD/Cys/Au) was fabricated. A rapid and direct electron transfer of SOD was realized at the gold electrode by using the cysteine ...

Superoxide-Mediated Cytotoxicity in Superoxide Dismutase-Deficient Fetal Fibroblasts
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1997To investigate the roles of CuZn superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) and Mn superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) in oxygen radical-mediated cytotoxicity and to distinguish the actions of these two enzymes, fetal fibroblasts were derived from mouse fetuses that are either deficient in CuZnSOD (Sod1-/+ and -/-) or MnSOD (Sod2-1+ and -/-) for in vitro studies. Whereas

Microbial Superoxide Dismutases
1989Publisher Summary The presence of oxygen in the environment presents both advantages and threat to all forms of life. The use of oxygen as a final electron acceptor provides more energy than that afforded by anaerobic fermentation. Oxygen is also useful in many biosynthetic reactions.

Superoxide constitutes a major signal of mitochondrial superoxide flash
Life Sciences, 2013Mitochondrial flashes detected with an N- and C-terminal circularly-permuted yellow fluorescent protein (cpYFP) have been thought to represent transient and quantal bursts of superoxide production under physiological, stressful and pathophysiological conditions.

SUPEROXIDE RADICALS, SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASES AND THE AEROBIC LIFESTYLE
Photochemistry and Photobiology, 1978Abstract— The superoxide radical (O‐2) is a commonplace product of the biological reduction of molecular oxygen and plays an important role in oxygen toxicity. Superoxide dismutases (SOD) catalytically scavenge this radical and are the primary defense against its cytotoxicity. The data which support these statements have been briefly reviewed.

Bacterial Superoxide Dismutases
1988Superoxide dismutase (SOD) has played a major role in establishing the biological relevance of oxyradicals. To many oxyradical researchers, “superoxide dismutase” connotes a copper-zinc SOD (CuZnSOD), the first dismutase to be purified and the form of prime interest clinically. However, superoxide dismutases containing manganese or iron as cofactor are
