Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Re-evaluation of penicillin and ceftriaxone MIC results to predict susceptibility to the oral cephalosporin, cefpodoxime, in Streptococcus pneumoniae clinical isolates from the United States according to CLSI guidelines (2019–2021)

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Microbiology
Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) M100Ed24 (2024) states that Streptococcus pneumoniae susceptible to oral penicillin can be considered susceptible to various β-lactams, including oral cephalosporins.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

AI-Powered Convolutional Neural Network Surrogate Modeling for High-Speed Finite Element Analysis in the NPPs Fuel Performance Framework

open access: yesEnergies
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are proposed for use in the nuclear power plant domain as surrogate models to enhance the computational efficiency of finite element analyses in simulating nuclear fuel behavior under varying conditions.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

A Development of a Human Cranial Bone Surrogate for Impact Studies

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2013
In order to replicate the fracture behavior of the intact human skull under impact it becomes necessary to develop a material having the mechanical properties of cranial bone.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Factors Associated With the Do-Not-Resuscitate Decision Among Surrogates of Elderly Residents at a Nursing Home in Taiwan

open access: yesInternational Journal of Gerontology, 2017
Background: Do-not-resuscitate (DNR) in nursing homes is an emerging advance directive in Taiwan, but little research has been conducted. The purpose was to determine the factors associated with signing a DNR directive in the largest hospital affiliated ...
