Symmetry and symmetry breaking in science and arts
In this review article, symmetry and symmetry breaking are considered as complementary principles in science and arts. It starts with symmetry and symmetry breaking in early world views of nature and art.

A well-known result by Palamidessi tells us that πmix(the π-calculus with mixed choice) is more expressive than πsep(its subset with only separate choice). The proof of this result analyses their different expressive power concerning leader election in symmetric networks.

Bottom quark and tau lepton masses in a toy $$\textrm{SU}(6)$$ SU ( 6 ) model
We study a toy $$\textrm{SU}(6)$$ SU ( 6 ) model with the symmetry breaking pattern of the extended 331 symmetry of $$\textrm{SU}(3)_c \otimes \textrm{SU}(3)_W \otimes \textrm{U}(1)_X$$ SU ( 3 ) c ⊗ SU ( 3 ) W ⊗ U ( 1 ) X .

Effects of symmetry-breaking on electromagnetic backscattering
Systems with a discrete rotational symmetry $$2\pi /n$$ 2 π / n where $$n\ge 3$$ n ≥ 3 that also have electromagnetic duality symmetry exhibit zero backscattering.

Semaphorin Breaks Symmetry [PDF]
Axon-dendrite polarity is likely instructed by extrinsic cues in the developing nervous system, though the mechanisms governing this process remain to be fully elucidated. In this issue of Neuron, Shelly et al. show that the axon guidance cue Semaphorin 3A can promote dendrite growth by inhibiting axon specification.

Selection rules for breaking selection rules
Floquet systems often exhibit dynamical symmetries (DS) that govern the time-dependent dynamics and result in selection rules. When a DS is broken, selection rule deviations are expected.

Division algebraic symmetry breaking
Reframing certain well-known particle models in terms of normed division algebras leads to two new results for BSM physics.(1) We identify a sequence of complex structures which induces a cascade of breaking symmetries: Spin(10) ↦ Pati-Salam ↦ Left-Right

Magnetoexcitons Break Antiunitary Symmetries [PDF]
We show analytically and numerically that the application of an external magnetic field to highly excited Rydberg excitons breaks all antiunitary symmetries in the system. Only by considering the complete valence band structure of a direct band gap cubic semiconductor, the Hamiltonian of excitons leads to the statistics of a Gaussian unitary ensemble ...

Are supersymmetric models with minimal particle content under tension for testing at LHC?
In supersymmetric models with minimal particle content and without large left-right squarks mixing, the conventional knowledge is that the Higgs Boson mass around 125 GeV leads to top squark masses O(10) TeV, far beyond the reach of colliders.
