This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

Synthetic biology-inspired development of live attenuated influenza vaccines
Live attenuated influenza vaccines (LAIVs) provide robust, cross-protective immunity but have traditionally been developed empirically and are associated with safety concerns.

Publisher Correction: Encryption and steganography of synthetic gene circuits
The original version of this Article contained an error in Fig. 4. In the lower part of the three gene circuit diagrams in panel b, the flat-headed arrow linking lambdaCI to the tetR promoter incorrectly pointed to the tetR gene body.

The economics of synthetic biology
Mol Syst Biol. 3: 117 Ten years ago, genetic engineering was limited to cutting and pasting DNA from existing organisms. Today's biologists can write down gene sequences that have never existed anywhere, place an order over the Internet, and receive the desired DNA by return mail.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

A transient mutational burst occurs during yeast colony development
Characterizing the contribution of mutators to mutation accumulation is essential for understanding cellular adaptation and diseases like cancer. By measuring single and double mutation rates, including point mutations, segmental duplications, and ...

The ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy as guardians of the cellular proteome
This Perspective covers the three principles governing the crosstalk between the ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy in cellular proteostasis: (1) a shared ubiquitin code routing substrates via shuttle factors or autophagy receptors; (2) spatial compartmentalization into phase‐separated degradation hubs and organelle‐specific modules (exemplified

A noncanonical role of roX RNAs in autosomal epigenetic repression
Long noncoding RNAs known as roX (RNA on the X) are crucial for male development in Drosophila, as their loss leads to male lethality from the late larval stages.

Models for synthetic biology [PDF]
Synthetic biological engineering is emerging from biology as a distinct discipline based on quantification. The technologies propelling synthetic biology are not new, nor is the concept of designing novel biological molecules. What is new is the emphasis on system behavior.
