Evolution of repetitive DNA in angiosperms: examples from Nicotiana allopolyploids [PDF]
PhDAllopolyploidy, interspecific hybridisation coupled with genome multiplication, is a prevailing force in the evolution of angiosperms. This thesis examines the consequences of allopolyploidy at the genomic level.

An allosteric synthetic DNA [PDF]
Allosteric DNA oligonucleotides are potentially useful diagnostic reagents. Here we develop a model system for the study of allosteric interactions in DNAs. A DNA that binds either Cibacron blue or cholic acid was isolated and partially characterized. Isolation was performed using a multi-stage SELEX.

Synthetic DNA Synthesis and Assembly: Putting the Synthetic in Synthetic Biology [PDF]
The chemical synthesis of DNA oligonucleotides and their assembly into synthons, genes, circuits, and even entire genomes by gene synthesis methods has become an enabling technology for modern molecular biology and enables the design, build, test, learn, and repeat cycle underpinning innovations in synthetic biology.

The Electromechanics of DNA in a Synthetic Nanopore [PDF]
We have explored the electromechanical properties of DNA on a nanometer-length scale using an electric field to force single molecules through synthetic nanopores in ultrathin silicon nitride membranes. At low electric fields, E < 200 mV/10 nm, we observed that single-stranded DNA can permeate pores with a diameter >/=1.0 nm, whereas double-stranded ...

The ethics of synthetic DNA [PDF]
In this paper, we discuss the ethical concerns that may arise from the synthesis of human DNA. To date, only small stretches of DNA have been constructed, but the prospect of generating human genomes is becoming feasible. At the same time, the significance of genes for identity, health and reproduction is coming under increased scrutiny. We examine the
