Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Systemic Treatment of Vitreous Inflammation [PDF]

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, 2012
Non infectious vitreous inflammation is often vision threatening and can be associated with potentially life-threatening systemic conditions. Treatment is often challenging as it involves systemic medications that can be associated with adverse effects.

Nutrient/TOR signaling controls adipose mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) to regulate organismal growth in Drosophila

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Animals must match their growth rate to available nutrients. We show that in Drosophila larvae, the nutrient‐sensing TOR kinase controls growth by regulating levels of TFAM, a key regulator of mitochondrial function, in the adipose tissue. When nutrients are abundant, high TOR activity suppresses TFAM, lowering mitochondrial bioenergetic activity and ...

Infection and inflammation in the cardiovascular system [PDF]

open access: yesCardiovascular Research, 2003
Infectious disease is one of the few genuine adventures left in the world. Hans Zinsser (1878–1940), Rats, Lice and History Infection and inflammation of the cardiovascular system are a frequent cause of cardiac and/or vascular disease, which represents an enormous clinical burden in adult medicine.

Engineering peptides into antibodies—opportunities and strategies for therapeutic innovation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Peptides and antibodies occupy complementary therapeutic niches. Peptides recognize difficult targets in a compact format, while antibodies add specificity, long half‐life, and effector functions. This review examines strategies that merge both modalities—peptide grafting into loops, terminal and Fc fusions, and bioconjugation—highlighting how ...

Epigenetic reprogramming of lineage switching in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cancer cells rarely commit to a single identity. Epigenetic mechanisms and tumor microenvironment cues push epithelial cells toward flexible, hybrid states that can shift into mesenchymal, neuroendocrine, or stem‐like fates, driving metastasis, drug resistance, and tumor heterogeneity. Targeting the epigenetic regulators behind these transitions, using

Effect of inflammation on the relationship of pulse pressure and mortality in haemodialysis. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The effect of hypertension on mortality in haemodialysis patients is controversial and can be confounded by non-traditional risk factors like systemic inflammation. This study examined the effect of systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure

Contribution of the galanin system to inflammation [PDF]

open access: yesSpringerPlus, 2015
Neurogenic inflammatory components mediated by peptidergic sensory nerves have a crucial impact on the symptoms of inflammatory diseases. Galanin is a regulatory sensory neuropeptide, which was shown to attenuate neurogenic inflammation, but our current understanding about its endogenous targets, and physiologic importance is incomplete.

Autophagy and mitophagy in pancreatic β‐cell homeostasis and their involvement in diabetes pathophysiology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the role of autophagy and mitophagy in maintaining pancreatic β‐cell function and homeostasis. We discuss how genetic defects affecting these pathways contribute to the development of type 1, type 2, monogenic, and gestational diabetes. We further explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Created in BioRender.

Increasing Tau 4R Tau Levels Exacerbates Hippocampal Tau Hyperphosphorylation in the hTau Model of Tauopathy but Also Tau Dephosphorylation Following Acute Systemic Inflammation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Copyright © 2020 Barron, Gartlon, Dawson, Atkinson and Pardon. Inflammation is considered a mechanistic driver of Alzheimer's disease, thought to increase tau phosphorylation, the first step to the formation of neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs).
