Synergistic Multi‐Layer Renewable Barrier Coatings on Porous Packaging Materials Using Enhanced Anionic Cellulose‐Based Biopolymers and Chitosan

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 13, Issue 2, 20 January 2026.
Duallayer coating, using a roll‐to‐roll method, of biopolymers on paper with improved gas barrier properties. ABSTRACT In this work, we examine ways to advance sustainability in material packaging by applying scalable, dual‐layer coating techniques for generating thin biopolymer barrier films on paper substrates.

Hummingbird Feeders Can Provide eDNA for Detection of Nectar‐Feeding Bats

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 1, January–February 2026.
This study monitors nectar‐feeding bats (Leptonycteris nivalis, Leptonycteris yerbabuenae, and Choeronycteris mexicana) through eDNA swabs of hummingbird feeders collected by citizen scientists. Using novel qPCR assays, we successfully detected L. yerbabuenae and C. mexicana in a grand majority of samples. Previously only known to occur in the U.S.

Beyond Supply and Demand: The Moral Economy of Price Formation in Slab City

open access: yesEconomic Anthropology, Volume 13, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT This article investigates the unique economic practices of Slab City, California, an off‐grid community that rejects mainstream US values. Despite operating within the broader US economic system, Slab City residents have developed alternative forms of exchange, using cigarettes and cannabis alongside US dollars.

Using Noninvasive Magnetic Resonance Imaging for the Visualization of Embryos of the Viviparous Goodeidae (Pisces; Cyprinodontiformes) at Different Developmental Stages

open access: yesInternational Journal of Zoology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
The study of prenatal interactions of embryonic viviparous Cyprinodontidae (Pisces) can illuminate the evolution of this reproductive mode. Yet the small size, relative scarcity, and conservation status severely limit this potential. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can solve or palliate these limitations.

Optimization of a Beverage Using Mixture Design With Operational Variables

open access: yesJournal of Engineering, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
The optimization of formulated products often requires simultaneous consideration of mixture composition and processing conditions, as both factors can strongly influence the final response. In this study, a mixture experimental design incorporating process variables was applied to the optimization of a prepared beverage (margarita), with the objective
