Dynamics of coupled thalamocortical modules [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Computational Neuroscience, 2010
We develop a model of thalamocortical dynamics using a shared population of thalamic neurons to couple distant cortical regions. Behavior of the model is determined as a function of the connection strengths with shared and unshared populations in the thalamus, either within a relay nucleus or the reticular nucleus.

Artificial intelligence for adaptive neuromodulation in drug‐resistant epilepsy

open access: yesEpilepsia, EarlyView.
Abstract Drug‐resistant epilepsy (DRE) affects nearly one third of people with epilepsy and is associated with substantial cognitive, psychiatric, and mortality burdens. For patients who are not candidates for resection or laser interstitial thermal therapy, neuromodulation therapies such as vagus nerve stimulation, deep brain stimulation, and ...

A genuine layer 4 in motor cortex with prototypical synaptic circuit connectivity

open access: yeseLife, 2014
The motor cortex (M1) is classically considered an agranular area, lacking a distinct layer 4 (L4). Here, we tested the idea that M1, despite lacking a cytoarchitecturally visible L4, nevertheless possesses its equivalent in the form of excitatory ...

Thalamocortical inhibitory dynamics support conscious perception

open access: yesNeuroImage, 2020
Whether thalamocortical interactions play a decisive role in conscious perception remains an open question. We presented rapid red/green color flickering stimuli, which induced the mental perception of either an illusory orange color or non-fused red and

Which Neural Tract Plays a Major Role in Memory Impairment After Multiple Cerebral Infarcts? A Case Report [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Rehabilitation Medicine, 2018
Injury to the thalamocortical tract (one in the Papez circuit) that leads to memory impairment following brain injury is very rare. In this study, we present a case of partial injury to the thalamocortical tract that causes memory impairment after ...

Thalamo-cortical network activity between migraine attacks. Insights from MRI-based microstructural and functional resting-state network correlation analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
BACKGROUND: Resting state magnetic resonance imaging allows studying functionally interconnected brain networks. Here we were aimed to verify functional connectivity between brain networks at rest and its relationship with thalamic microstructure in ...

GABAergic changes in the thalamocortical circuit in Parkinson's disease

open access: yesHuman Brain Mapping, 2019
Parkinson's disease is characterized by bradykinesia, rigidity, and tremor. These symptoms have been related to an increased gamma‐aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic inhibitory drive from globus pallidus onto the thalamus.

A model of thalamocortical relay cells [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, 2005
It is well established that the main intrinsic electrophysiological properties of thalamocortical relay cells, production of a low threshold burst upon release from hyperpolarized potential and production of a train of single spikes following stimulation from depolarized potentials, can be readily modelled using a single compartment. There is, however,

Pediatric sensorimotor cortical responsiveness to intracerebral stimulation during stereoelectroencephalographic monitoring: Age effects and area specificity

open access: yesEpilepsia, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective This study was undertaken to determine how age influences clinical responsiveness to intracerebral electrical stimulation (IES) in children across primary and secondary sensorimotor cortices and to assess age effects on response complexity and area‐specific responsiveness.

Mapping cortical mesoscopic networks of single spiking cortical or sub-cortical neurons

open access: yeseLife, 2017
Understanding the basis of brain function requires knowledge of cortical operations over wide-spatial scales, but also within the context of single neurons.
