Private heat for public warmth: how huddling shapes individual thermogenic responses of rabbit pups [PDF]

Background: Within their litter, young altricial mammals compete for energy (constraining growth and survival) but cooperate for warmth.

Apart from thyroid hormones, as the main hormonal regulators of obligatory thermogenesis, and catecholamines, as major hormonal regulators of facultative thermogenesis, production of heat in homeotherms can also be influenced by steroids. Generally, hormones can influence heat production by regulating the activity of various enzymes of oxidative ...

QPLOT Neurons—Converging on a Thermoregulatory Preoptic Neuronal Population
The preoptic area of the hypothalamus is a homeostatic control center. The heterogeneous neurons in this nucleus function to regulate the sleep/wake cycle, reproduction, thirst and hydration, as well as thermogenesis and other metabolic responses ...

Objective: Activating brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis is a promising approach to combat obesity and metabolic disorders. The post-transcriptional regulation of BAT thermogenesis mediated by RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) is still not fully ...

Octopamine drives honeybee thermogenesis
In times of environmental change species have two options to survive: they either relocate to a new habitat or they adapt to the altered environment. Adaptation requires physiological plasticity and provides a selection benefit.

Recurrent Hypothermia and Autonomic Dysfunction Secondary to Shapiro Syndrome
ABSTRACT A 44‐year‐old man presented with recurrent hypothermia, diaphoresis and hypertension. Extensive investigation for infectious, inflammatory, metabolic and endocrine aetiologies was negative. MR scan of the brain demonstrated no lesions but revealed callosal dysgenesis, consistent with Shapiro syndrome.

Evaluation of Thermogenesis in Cold-Acclimated and Exercise-Trained Rats [PDF]
This study was designed to evaluated the resting thermogenesis in cold-acclimated and exercisetrained rats,c onsidering the body composition. This total metabolic rate and lean body mass for the sedentary warm acclimated group were similar to those for ...

Energy expenditure during overfeeding
The large inter-individual variation in weight gain during standardized overfeeding together with a weight gain that is often less than theoretically calculated from the energy excess suggest that there are differences between persons in the capacity to ...

ABSTRACT Brown and beige adipocytes dissipate energy as heat, yet effective strategies to enhance their mitochondrial efficiency remain limited. Here, we identify Agnuside (AGN) as a selective stabilizer of the complex I assembly factor NDUFAF6. AGN directly binds cytosolic NDUFAF6, suppresses its ubiquitination, prolongs its half‐life, and facilitates
