Soil nutrients and microbial community resistant to patch‐burn grazing in southwestern North Dakota
Abstract Patch‐burn grazing uses the interactive effects of prescribed fire and herbivory to increase heterogeneity in aboveground ecosystem properties. Understanding how management that targets aboveground heterogeneity translates to soil properties and processes provides an important whole‐system context for practitioners.

Abstract Intermediate wheatgrass (IWG) [Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth & D. R. Dewey] is a promising perennial grain candidate that The Land Institute has been directly domesticating since 2001. Grain from improved IWG can be sold under the trademark Kernza.

Legume intercropping in organic timothy seed crops
Abstract Timothy (Phleum pratense L.) is a perennial grass widely grown for livestock feed in temperate regions of the world. It is one of the primary forage grasses grown for seed in Scandinavia due to good cold tolerance and high‐quality feed characteristics.

Genotype‐by‐environment interactions influence grain yields of intermediate wheatgrass
Abstract Crop rotation with perennial grain crops, such as intermediate wheatgrass (IWG; Thinopyrum intermedium), marketed as Kernza, promotes agroecological intensification and environmental sustainability relative to annual cropping systems. To assess yield performance and adaptability of IWG breeding populations across diverse environments ...

Evaluating Kernza (Thinopyrum intermedium) as a Co‐Fermentation Feedstock for Bioethanol Production
ABSTRACT Background Kernza (Thinopyrum intermedium), a perennial grain developed by the Land Institute, presents a promising alternative to conventional ethanol feedstocks due to its deep‐root systems, low fertilizer requirements, and carbon sequestration potential.

Development and Characterization of Novel St-R Translocation Triticale from a Trigeneric Hybrid
Triticale (×Triticosecale Wittmack), a synthetic hybrid of wheat (Triticum spp.) and rye (Secale cereale), is a valuable dual-purpose crop for its high yield and stress tolerance.

Deep roots through time and crops: insight from five seasons at DeepRootLab
Summary Deep‐rooted crops accessing water and nutrients from deep soil layers enhance the resource base for crop production. However, studying these roots in field conditions is labour‐intensive, limiting research scope. We established a field root research facility with 48 plots for replicated experiments.

Soils are globally degraded due in part to conventional agriculture and wildland conversion. To address the global challenge of soil degradation, we formed an interdisciplinary, cross‐institutional collaborative research team, New Roots for Restoration, to understand how perennial plant root and shoot traits relate to one another, and how they ...
