A [(salen)-AlIIICl] complex catalyzes the Passerini three-component reaction of an aldehyde, a carboxylic acid, and an isocyanide to afford alpha -acyloxyamides, e.g., I, with good to excellent enantioselectivity. Three-Component Reactions for Post-Polymerization Modifications

A Cu-catalyzed multi-component reaction (CuMCR) of terminal alkynes, sulfonyl azides, and amines was employed in a post-polymerization modification process. The reaction was conducted on polystyrene bearing 20 mol % alkyne groups with 4-toluenesulfonyl azide and dihexylamine in the presence of a Cu(PPh3)3Br/diisopropylethylamine catalyst.

2-aminoalkanesulfonic acids were synthesized by a three-component alkene-SO3.DMF-acetonitrile reaction, followed by acetamido hydrolysis. Trifluoromethanesulfonic acid was added to the amino-sulfonation mixture to accelerate the reaction and prevent the competitive formation of by-products.
