Throughfall and throughfall spatial variability in Madrean oak forest communities of northeastern Mexico

Journal of Hydrology, 2004
Point throughfall data were generated in two representative red oak stands of a small Madrean watershed in northeastern Mexico during the 2000 and the 2001 wet seasons. Cumulative gross precipitation for 18 selected events was 392.9 mm, while the mean cumulative point throughfall flux from 38-fixed gauges was 331.0±9.0 mm (84.2±2.3%).

An empirical method for approximating canopy throughfall [PDF]

open access: yesHydrological Processes, 2012
AbstractRainfall replenishes surface and subsurface water but is partially intercepted by a canopy. However, it is challenging to quantify the rainfall passing through the canopy (i.e. throughfall). This study derives simple‐to‐use empirical equations relating throughfall to canopy and rainfall characteristics.

A new method for determining the throughfall fraction and throughfall depth in vegetation canopies

Journal of Hydrology, 2010
Summary A new method for quantifying throughfall fractions and depths under vegetation canopies is introduced and evaluated. The method employs the progressive loss of weight of tablets of calcium sulphate hemihydrate (‘Plaster of Paris’) set out beneath conventional throughfall collecting funnels to form ‘throughfall integrating funnels’ (TIFs). From rainfall to throughfall in a maritime vineyard [PDF]

open access: yesScience of The Total Environment, 2012
This study deals with the characteristics of throughfall produced by vine (Vitis vinifera L.) in one of the most common pedoclimatic conditions for grape production: a soil derived from marine sediments under a temperate Mediterranean climate, and located rather close to the seacoast.

Temporal persistence of spatial patterns in throughfall

Journal of Hydrology, 2005
Spatial and temporal variability of throughfall beneath forests are potentially important controls on soil processes, watershed hydrology, and biogeochemistry. We used a set of 94 rain gauges to measure variability of throughfall beneath three forest stands in the Pacific Northwest, USA.

Impact of tree species diversity on throughfall deposition in a young temperate forest plantation [PDF]

open access: yesScience of the Total Environment, 2022
Throughfall deposition is an important pathway via which particles, aerosols and gases can move from the atmosphere to the forest floor, which can greatly impact forest biodiversity and functioning.
