The chemical composition of throughfall and canopy leaching, as well as the acid neutralizing capacity and alkalinity depended on the age of Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst) stands and season of the year. A higher amount of sulphur and strong acids was deposited to the soil in the older age classes.

The Walker Branch Watershed (∼100 ha), located at 35°58′ N latitude and 84°17′ W longitude, is a part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) National Environmental Research Park near Oak Ridge, Tennessee (Johnson and Van Hook 1989). Long-term (50-year) mean annual precipitation is 1352 mm, and mean annual temperature is 14.2°C.

Organic halogens in spruce forest throughfall

Abstract Deposition of dissolved organic halogens by throughfall was determined in a small spruce forest site in Denmark (56°28'N, 8°24'E). The mean annual deposition of dissolved organic halogens was 377 g ha−1yr−1, and larger than the general deposition by precipitation.

Abstract The wet- and throughfall deposition of nitrogen and sulphur compounds to a spruce forest edge in Sweden was studied using preserved as well as unpreserved collectors. During the warmer part of the year inorganic nitrogen was lost in unpreserved throughfall collectors, if they were not shielded from light.
