estimating mean throughfall

2016
The selection of an appropriate spatial extent of a sampling plot is one among several important decisions involved in planning a throughfall sampling scheme. In fact, the choice of the extent may determine whether or not a study can adequately characterize the hydrological fluxes of the studied ecosystem.

Throughfall Chemistry and Canopy Processing Mechanisms

1990
Forest canopies receive chemical inputs from the atmosphere by rainfall, cloud droplet capture, and the accumulation of particles and vapors by dry deposition. These chemical inputs interact with surfaces in the canopy and are released to the forest floor primarily as throughfall (TF).

Preservation of Throughfall Samples by Chloroform and Thymol

International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry, 1995
Abstract Chloroform (trichloromethane) and saturated thymol (5-methyl-2-[1-methyl ethyl]phenol) were used as biocides to preserve synthetic and real throughfall water samples for up to 50 days. Three replicate sealed sample bottles were kept in a cold room in the dark at 2[ddot]C to simulate laboratory storage conditions, and three replicate samples ...

An inexpensive balance for measuring throughfall in cereals

Agricultural Meteorology, 1982
Abstract The construction and electronics of a balance designed to measure throughfall in the inter-row of cereal crops with a resolution of less than 0.1mm of water, are described. The field performance is assessed and results from three days are used to obtain the amount of rainfall intercepted by a wheat canopy with complete ground cover.

Effect of vegetation type on throughfall deposition and seepage flux

Environmental Pollution, 2008
This paper compares different vegetation types (coniferous and deciduous forest, grassed and pure heathland) in terms of input (throughfall deposition) and output (seepage flux) in a region with intermediate nitrogen load (+/-20kg Nha(-1)y(-1) via bulk precipitation) in comparable conditions in north Belgium.

Throughfall variation in a mixed deciduous forest

2022
Gross rainfall and throughfall were measured in an uneven-aged, mixed deciduous forest in western Virginia from August 6, 1972 to June 19, 1973. Storms were grouped according to leafy (growing) season and leafless (dormant) season for analysis of gross rainfall and throughfall.

Throughfall and Stemflow in the Forest Nutrient Cycle

1983
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a number of factors influencing the throughfall and stemflow quality and their variation. The effect of the canopy in altering the precipitation quality is also discussed. The annual nutrient return to the forest soil for the elements K, Na, and S is predominantly via throughfall and stemflow and little ...
