Thymopoiesis requiresPax9 function in thymic epithelial cells
European Journal of Immunology, 2002The epithelial thymic anlage develops from the third pharyngeal pouch. Pax9 is expressed in the entire pharyngeal endoderm, and its function is required for normal development of organs derived from pharyngeal pouches. Here, we show that in Pax9 null mice, the thymic anlage develops as an ectopic polyp-like structure in the larynx.

Notch activation in thymic epithelial cells induces development of thymic microenvironments
Molecular Immunology, 2009The development and maintenance of thymic microenvironments depends on sustained crosstalk signals derived from developing thymocytes. However, the molecular basis for the initial phase in the lymphoid dependent development of thymic epithelial cells (TECs) remains unclear.

Cellular interactions between developing thymocytes and cells of the thymic microenvironment are necessary for maturation of thymocytes into mature T cells. While much is known about the molecules on developing T cells that mediate these interactions, little is known about the surface molecules of human thymic epithelial (TE) cells.

The adaptive phenotype of cortical thymic epithelial cells
European Journal of Immunology, 2009AbstractEpithelial cells in the thymus are required for positive and negative selection of developing thymocytes. Although medullary epithelial cells play a major role in negative selection owing to their facility of expressing peripheral self‐antigens, the adaptive features of cortical epithelial cells are largely unknown. A paper in this issue of the

Development and Function of Cortical Thymic Epithelial Cells
2013The thymic cortex provides a microenvironment that supports the generation and T cell antigen receptor (TCR)-mediated selection of CD4(+)CD8(+)TCRαβ(+) thymocytes. Cortical thymic epithelial cells (cTECs) are the essential component that forms the architecture of the thymic cortex and induces the generation as well as the selection of newly generated T
