The thymus plays an essential role in the development and selection of T cells by providing a unique microenvironment that is mainly composed of thymic epithelial cells (TECs). We previously identified stem cells of medullary TECs (mTECs) that are crucial for central tolerance induction using a novel clonogenic culture system.

FK506 is an immunosuppressive agent that was discovered in Japan. Many experiments on organ transplantation have shown the prolongation of allograft survival in animals by treatment with FK506. Previous studies have also shown that FK506 has a remarkable immunosuppressive effect and improves the outcome of liver transplantation.

Antibodies to thymic epithelial cells in myasthenia gravis

The presence of anti-thymus antibodies was investigated in the serum of 36 patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). Using an immunofluorescence technique on frozen thymic sections, we found 45% of patients sera reacting with normal or MG thymuses. Staining was confined to subcapsular and medullary keratin-positive epithelial cells.
