Accident Analysis and Prevention, 1997A field study was conducted to assess the impact of continuous time headway feedback on following behaviour. An equipped vehicle was fitted with a microwave radar connected to a head-down display. The display was supplemented by an auditory tone which sounded if headway decreased below 1 second.

A comparison of headway and time to collision as safety indicators
Accident Analysis and Prevention, 2003The two safety indicators "headway" and "time to collision (TTC)" are discussed and compared with respect to their usefulness in determining the safety of different traffic situations, like different locations in a junction. Over a 6-day-period traffic flow measures were taken in a four-way junction with stop signs on the minor road.

Applications of Advanced Technology in Transportation, 2006
This paper proposes two shifted continuous distribution models for preferred time headway (Tp) and time headway in steady state car-following (Tws), i.e. the lognormal and gamma models. Lognormal distribution with a shaft of 0.21 seconds provides a good fit to Tp, whereas a shift of 0.26 is proposed to Tws.
