Using convolutional neural networks to automatically score eight TIMSS 2019 graphical response items
International large-scale assessments (ILSAs) have used graphical response-based items to measure student ability for decades, but they have yet to implement automated scoring of these responses and instead rely on human scoring alone. To investigate how

The Effect Heterogeneity of Central Exams: Evidence from Timss, Timss-Repeat and PISA [PDF]
This paper uses extensive student-level micro databases of three international student achievement tests to estimate heterogeneity in the effect of external exit exams on student performance along three dimensions. First, quantile regressions show that the effect tends to increase with student ability.

Optimizing automated scoring in ILSAs with prompt compression
Automated scoring (AS) has become increasingly prevalent in educational measurement. However, applying it to international reading assessments remains challenging, particularly due to the length and complexity of the required prompting, driven by the ...

Differential item functioning detection across multiple groups
Abstract Differential item functioning (DIF) can be investigated by estimating item response theory (IRT) parameters separately for different respondent groups, thus allowing for the detection of discrepancies in parameter estimates across groups. However, before comparing the estimates, it is necessary to convert them to a common metric due to the ...
