When biology meets materials science – Interdisciplinary applications of electron microscopy

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Research at the interface between biology and materials science creates challenges for electron microscopists. Everything from the sample preparation to the choice of imaging and analytical techniques and the interpretation of the resulting data refuses to sit comfortably within the domain of one discipline or the other.

Manufacturing polycrystalline pellets of natural quartz for applications in thermoluminescence dosimetry

open access: yesMaterials Research, 2012
This paper describes the manufacturing process of quartz-pellets and shows their potential use as thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD) for those applications where low-levels of ionising radiation are present.

Emission spectra of sensitized and unsensitized LiF; TLD-100 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1965
It was found in a study of the emission spectra of LiF powders, the glow curve shape appears to be independent of wave length. Data indicate that any recombination centers created by radiation could not have an optical transition significantly different from that of the recombination center originally present. (FS)

Linking variation in genome size to cyst size in chrysophytes

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract Genome size varies tremendously across eukaryotes, which often contain far more DNA than expected from their biological complexity. To explain this paradox, selection‐based hypotheses propose that genome size evolves through selection acting on life‐history traits correlated with the phenotypic effects, independent of its genic content.

A retrospective cohort study on the potential link between dolutegravir-based anti-retroviral therapy and weight gain compared to efavirenz-based anti-retroviral therapy in a tertiary care center in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh

open access: yesNational Journal of Physiology, Pharmacy and Pharmacology
Background: Anti-retroviral therapies (ARTs) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) such as dolutegravir (DTG) and efavirenz have been associated with weight gain.

Comparison of RPL GD-301 and TLD-100 detectors responses by Monte Carlo simulation

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2015
(LiF:Mg,Ti) Thermo Luminescent Detectors are widely used for monitoring patient dose in radiotherapy treatments whereas Radio-Photoluminescent Dosimeters (RPL) are increasingly devoted to radiological protection purposes. A study, aiming at extending the

Assessment of Radiation Dose to the Lens of the Eye and Thyroid of Patients Undergoing Head and Neck Computed Tomography at Five Hospitals in Mashhad, Iran [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Medical Physics, 2018
Introduction: In recent years, the number of computed tomography (CT) scans, which is a high-dose technique, has increased significantly. Head and neck CT is performed frequently and thyroid, particularly in children, has always been considered a ...

Development of a Polydimethylsiloxane‐Based Flexible Digital Bolus Dosimeter: From Unit‐Cell Characterization to Linear Array for Skin‐Dose Distribution Verification

open access: yesphysica status solidi (a), Volume 223, Issue 15, 5 August 2026.
A flexible digital bolus dosimeter platform is proposed to address the challenges of surface‐dose monitoring. The study evaluates point‐dose performance using an IDE substrate and extends this to spatial dose distributions using an fPCB‐integrated 24‐pixel array.

Systematic review of physical and dosimetric criteria for managing CIEDs in radiotherapy: A medical physicist's perspective

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, Volume 27, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Aim Current radiotherapy (RT) guidelines for Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs) are largely based on clinical management strategies and retrospective reports. This systematic review adopts a medical physics perspective to provide a critical, quantitative analysis of the technical evidence required for developing robust safety ...
