An inhibitor of Staphylococcus aureus exfoliative toxin

open access: yesEastern Mediterranean Health Journal, 2001
We describe here an inhibitor of Staphylococcus aureus exfoliative toxin. The toxin was extracted from an S. aureus strain isolated from a case of staphylococcus scalded skin syndrome. The activity of the toxin was compared in tryptic soy broth and brain heart infusion broth. Both supported growth of S.

The association of shiga-like toxin with detergent-resistant membranes is modulated by glucosylceramide and is an essential requirement in the endoplasmic reticulum for a cytotoxic effect [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Receptor-mediated internalization to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and subsequent retro-translocation to the cytosol are essential sequential processes required for the productive intoxication of susceptible mammalian cells by Shiga-like toxin-1 (SLTx).

Further Characterization of Dopamine Release by Permeabilized PC 12 Cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
Rat pheochromocytoma cells (PC 12) permeabilized with staphylococcal α-toxin release [3H]dopamine after addition of micromolar Ca2+. This does not require additional Mg2+-ATP (in contrast to bovine adrenal medullary chromaffin cells).

Adenylylation of Gyrase and Topo IV by FicT Toxins Disrupts Bacterial DNA Topology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Toxin-antitoxin (TA) modules are ubiquitous molecular switches controlling bacterial growth via the release of toxins that inhibit cell proliferation.

A novel Hsp70 inhibitor prevents cell intoxication with the actin ADP-ribosylating Clostridium perfringens iota toxin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
International audienceHsp70 family proteins are folding helper proteins involved in a wide variety of cellular pathways. Members of this family interact with key factors in signal transduction, transcription, cell-cycle control, and stress response. Here,

Clostridium perfringens Epsilon-Toxin Impairs the Barrier Function in MDCK Cell Monolayers in a Ca2+-Dependent Manner

open access: yesToxins, 2020
Epsilon-toxin produced by Clostridium perfringens significantly contributes to the pathogeneses of enterotoxemia in ruminants and multiple sclerosis in humans. Epsilon-toxin forms a heptameric oligomer in the host cell membrane, promoting cell disruption.

Pinpointing anthrax-toxin inhibitors

open access: yesNature Biotechnology, 2002
Anthrax toxin consists of three components: protective antigen (PA), lethal factor (LF), and edema factor (EF). Individually, they are nontoxic.

Retrograde transport pathways utilised by viruses and protein toxins [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
A model has been presented for retrograde transport of certain toxins and viruses from the cell surface to the ER that suggests an obligatory interaction with a glycolipid receptor at the cell surface. Here we review studies on the ER trafficking cholera

Shiga Toxin Uptake and Sequestration in Extracellular Vesicles Is Mediated by Its B-Subunit

open access: yesToxins, 2020
Shiga toxin (Stx)-stimulated blood cells shed extracellular vesicles (EVs) which can transfer the toxin to the kidneys and lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Molecular Architecture of the Antiophidic Protein DM64 and its Binding Specificity to Myotoxin II From Bothrops asper Venom

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Biosciences, 2022
DM64 is a toxin-neutralizing serum glycoprotein isolated from Didelphis aurita, an ophiophagous marsupial naturally resistant to snake envenomation. This 64 kDa antitoxin targets myotoxic phospholipases A2, which account for most local tissue damage of ...
