IL-27 Modulates Chemokine Production in TNF-α -Stimulated Human Oral Epithelial Cells [PDF]
Background/Aims: Interleukin-27 (IL-27) is a cytokine which belongs to the IL-12 family. However, the role of IL-27 in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease is uncertain.

Subversion of antimicrobial calprotectin (S100A8/S100A9 complex) in the cytoplasm of TR146 epithelial cells after invasion by Listeria monocytogenes [PDF]
Expressed by squamous mucosal keratinocytes, calprotectin is a complex of two EF-hand calcium-binding proteins of the S100 subfamily (S100A8 and S100A9) with significant antimicrobial activity. Calprotectin-expressing cells resist invasion by Porphyromonas gingivalis, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. typhimurium).

Background: Today, the use of titanium dioxide (TiO 2) as food additive (E171) has been banned by the European Commission, due to concerns for human health based on studies showing TiO 2 particles systematically available, tissue accumulation, a genotoxic risk and possible promotion of precancerous lesions. However, E171 is still present in toothpastes

Optimization of an oral mucosa in vitro model based on cell line TR146 [PDF]
During the last years, the popularity of saliva has been increasing for its applicability as a diagnostic fluid. Blood biomarker molecules have to cross the blood-saliva barrier (BSB) in order to appear in saliva. The BSB consists of all oral and salivary gland epithelial barriers.

Acid Dentin Lysates Increase Amelotin Expression in Oral Epithelial Cells and Gingival Fibroblasts
Amelotin (AMTN) is a secretory calcium-binding phosphoprotein controlling the adhesion of epithelial cells to the tooth surface, forming a protective seal against the oral cavity.

Boosting buccal drug absorption: Mechanistic insights into bilosome-mediated delivery [PDF]
Effective buccal drug delivery is limited by the barrier properties of the mucosa, necessitating innovative systems to enhance permeability without compromising tissue integrity.
