Iron intake and transferrin saturation in adolescents

The Journal of Pediatrics, 1975
The relationship of maturity, age, race, sex and income level to dietary intake and body stores of iron, as indicated by percent of transferrin saturation, was studied in healthy adolescents. Maturity rating, sex, and race were significant. Level of family income was not a significant factor.

Percent transferrin saturation in segregating hemochromatosis

American Journal of Medical Genetics, 1990
AbstractThe segregation of genetic hemochromatosis was analyzed by using percent transferrin saturation (TS) as a phenotypic marker of the disease. Homozygotes for the disease were readily discernable with the added information provided by the quantitative indicator.

Worse Outcomes of Patients With HFE Hemochromatosis With Persistent Increases in Transferrin Saturation During Maintenance Therapy

open access: yesClinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, 2017
International audienceBACKGROUND and AIMS: Even if patients with hemochromatosis maintain low serum levels of ferritin, they still have an increased risk of general and joint symptoms, which reduce quality of life.

Screening for Iron Overload Using Transferrin Saturation

Journal of Internal Medicine, 1984
ABSTRACT People with parenchymal iron overload exhibit an elevated serum iron concentration and a raised transferrin (TIBC) saturation early in the course of the disease. They can therefore be detected by simple laboratory tests before organ damage has occurred.

Estimation of the Saturation of Serum Transferrin by an Electrophoretic Technique

Annals of Clinical Biochemistry: International Journal of Laboratory Medicine, 1982
An electrophoretic method is described for estimating the saturation of serum transferrin. After first precipitating most of the other proteins with Rivanol, the apo-, mono-, and di-ferric transferrins are separated by electrophoresis in urea-polyacrylamide gel. Densitometric scanning enables the percentage saturation to be calculated.

HFE genotype and transferrin saturation in the United States

Genetics in Medicine, 2003
Examine the penetrance (defined by high transferrin saturation [TS]) of C282Y and H63D in the U.S. population.5171 participants from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1992 to 1994.77.1% (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.3, 95.1) of men and 51.9% (95% CI, 0, 84.2) of women with C282Y homozygosity had high TS. The associations of

Effect of Transferrin Saturation on Iron Absorption in Man

New England Journal of Medicine, 1964
IN a previous report1 data were presented indicating that the level of transferrin saturation was not important in regulating iron absorption from the gastrointestinal tract during short-term experiments. These data conflicted with other reports, which concluded that the level of transferrin saturation played a major part in regulating iron absorption ...

Transferrin Saturation Inversely Correlates with Platelet Function

Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 2019
Background The association between iron overload (IO) and risk of cardiovascular disease is controversial. Epidemiological studies have found a significant negative association of transferrin (Tf) saturation and cardiovascular events suggesting that higher body iron possibly confer a protective effect towards developing cardiovascular ...

Serum Iron and Transferrin Saturation in Women with Special Reference to Women with Low Transferrin Saturation

Scandinavian Journal of Haematology, 1979
Serum iron and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) were determined in a population sample of 1462 women in age strata between 38 and 60. Serum iron and TIBC values were similar in the various ages studied but with a slight trend towards higher serum iron and lower TIBC values in the upper ages.

[Concentration of transferrin iron and transferrin saturation in blood].

Ukrains'kyi biokhimichnyi zhurnal (1999 ), 2002
Transferrin iron, transferrin protein concentrations, and transferrin saturation have been determined for the first time in the whole blood. Microsamples were taken from healthy adults and patients with occupational secondary haemochromatosis using quantitative electron spin resonance technique.
