Effects of mycophenolate sodium on mucociliary clearance using a bronchial section and anastomosis rodent model

open access: yesClinics, 2011
OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of mycophenolate sodium on mucociliary clearance. INTRODUCTION: Mycophenolate is one of the most commonly used immunosuppressive drugs in lung transplantation.

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

The Narrative Engageability Scale: A Multidimensional Trait Measure for the Propensity to Become Engaged in a Story

open access: yesInternational Journal of Communication, 2019
This study developed a self-report measure for Narrative Engageability using 4 different data sets (N = 339, N = 514, N = 121, N = 151). Scale development started with an exploratory factor analysis, resulting in a 12-item measure with 4 distinct ...

PARK(ing) time–How park deficiency affects the biological clock in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Additive Effect of Dornase Alfa and Nacystelyn on Transportability and Viscoelasticity of Cystic Fibrosis Sputum

open access: yesCanadian Respiratory Journal, 2002
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of dornase alfa (DA), Nacystelyn (NAL) and their combination on mucociliary transportability and mucus viscoelasticity of cystic fibrosis (CF) sputum, and to assess whether the combination possesses an additive effect.

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Characteristics of Donghe Sandstone Transport Conductor in Hudson Oilfield, Tarim Basin and Its Oil and Gas Control Effect

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The Hudson Oilfield’s Donghe sandstone reservoir has multiple independent oil–water systems. The complex oil–water relationship is mainly due to reservoir heterogeneity, especially the sealing and shielding effects of interlayers. This paper uses methods
