Transsphenoidal encephaloceles

Surgical Neurology, 1983
Transsphenoidal encephaloceles are rare congenital anomalies that may be immediately apparent in infants that present with multiple cranial midline defects. They should also be suspected in patients presenting with cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, an epipharyngeal soft tissue mass, a visual defect, or an endocrinologic disturbance, especially when ...

Transseptal Transsphenoidal Hypophysectomy

Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, 1980
The usual surgical approach to the sella turcica is via a labial sulcus incision over the nasal spine with continuation backward to the nasal septum and sphenoid sinus. In our series of 25 transsphenoidal hypophysectomies, a primary transseptal approach was used, avoiding the oral incision.

Transsphenoidal Adenomectomy

AORN Journal, 1995
ABSTRACTThe pituitary gland is a complex organ controlling many of the body's hormonal and metabolic functions. The gland's complexity and location in the brain have a serious impact on the diagnosis and treatment of pituitary pathology. Several surgical approaches are available to treat pituitary tumors; however, the transsphenoidal approach allows ...

Transsphenoidal microhypophysectomy in acromegaly

Journal of Neurosurgery, 1977
✓ From July, 1970, to March, 1975, 62 transsphenoidal operations were performed on 61 acromegalic patients (39 males, 22 females). Of these patients, 58 presented with symptoms of hypersecretion of human growth hormone (HGH), with relatively infrequent local effects.

Transsphenoidal Removal of Craniopharyngioma

Pediatric Neurosurgery, 2008
Transsphenoidal microsurgical removal is appropriate therapy for a significant number of craniopharyngiomas. Favorable factors for the transsphenoidal approach are enlargement of the sella, cystic lesion and preoperative hypopituitarism. A series of 76 operative cases is presented. Long-term follow-up revealed successful results in 81% of patients.

Endoscopy and Transsphenoidal Surgery

Neurosurgery, 2004
ENDOSCOPY OFFERS INTERNAL visualization of many different cavities of the human body, with its specific vision inside the anatomy, close to the target area. The view of the surgical field in transsphenoidal surgery had been obtained with the naked eye from its beginning in 1907 up to the introduction of the operating microscope by Jules Hardy in the ...

Transsphenoidal meningohydroencephalocele

Journal of Neurosurgery, 1972
✓ A case of transsphenoidal meningohydroencephalocele with its associated anomalies is presented. Review of the embryological development of the sphenoid bone suggests that this defect occurs prior to the tenth week of intrauterine life. The associated abnormalities in this patient support this conclusion.

Evolution of Transsphenoidal Surgery

2003
The transsphenoidal route is the dominant approach to the pituitary and sellar area and is utilized for more than 95% of the surgical indications in this region. Pituitary adenomas represent the third most common primary intracranial tumor after gliomas and meningiomas, with a percentage of more than 15% in most series reported in the literature and ...

Microscope transsphenoidal surgery

Acta Neurochirurgica, 2012
The transsphenoidal approach to the pituitary using the microscope has undergone continuous modification since its introduction by Hardy over 50 years ago. It is one of the most effective and safest of major neurosurgical procedures with excellent outcomes and low complication rates.Although being displaced by the endoscopic approach, it remains the ...
