Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Risk and Temporal Changes of Heart Failure Among 5-Year Childhood Cancer Survivors: a DCOG-LATER Study

open access: yes, 2019
Background Heart failure is one of the most important late effects after treatment for cancer in childhood. The goals of this study were to evaluate the risk of heart failure, temporal changes by treatment periods, and the risk factors for heart failure ...

Urate-lowering therapy and kidney outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease and hyperuricemia

open access: yesSignal Transduction and Targeted Therapy
Hyperuricemia is considered a modifiable risk factor for the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). There remains controversy over the effects of urate-lowering therapy (ULT) on kidney outcomes in patients with CKD and hyperuricemia.

Investigating transcription factor dynamics in health and disease using FRAP

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
FRAP analysis of GFP‐tagged transcription factors reveals how molecular mobility and target engagement change in response to drug treatment. By combining live‐cell imaging, quantitative model fitting, and statistical analysis, this approach uncovers transcription factor dynamics linked to disease mechanisms, providing a powerful framework for ...

The brain in heart failure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
After atrial fibrillation, heart failure is the second most frequent cardiac association of stroke. Deteriorating left ventricular systolic function appears to increase the risk of cardioembolic stroke in heart failure.

Creatinine promotes adipose tissue wasting in chronic kidney disease via creatine and futile creatine cycle

open access: yesMolecular Metabolism
Objective: Cachexia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a wasting syndrome. The futile creatine cycle (FCC) contributes to energy waste in adipocytes. Creatinine is metabolite of creatine.

Subtype‐specific enhancer RNAs define transcriptional regulators and prognosis in breast cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study employed machine learning methodologies to perform the subtype‐specific classification of RNA‐seq data sets, which are mapped on enhancers from TCGA‐derived breast cancer patients. Their integration with gene expression (referred to as ProxCReAM eRNAs) and chromatin accessibility profiles has the potential to identify lineage‐specific and ...

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.
