A Multi-omic Association Study of Trimethylamine N-Oxide [PDF]
Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a circulating metabolite that has been implicated in the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD). In this paper, we identify blood markers, metabolites, proteins, gut microbiota patterns, and diets that are significantly associated with levels of plasma TMAO.

Trimethylamine N-Oxide (TMAO) as a Biomarker
2022The interaction between diet, microbiome, and noncommunicable disease onset is gaining growing attention. The trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a gut microbiota derivative that has been suggested as a potential regulator of human health, especially (but not exclusively) for its association with cardiovascular diseases. It derives from the trimethylamine

The Gut Microbial Metabolite Trimethylamine N-oxide, Incident CKD, and Kidney Function Decline
Journal of the American Society of NephrologyVisual Abstract Key Points In community-based US adults, higher plasma trimethylamine N-oxide levels associated with higher risk of incident CKD and greater rate of kidney function decline.

Microbial Dimethylsulfoxide and Trimethylamine-N-Oxide Respiration
2005Over the last two decades, the biochemistry and genetics of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) respiration has been characterised, particularly in Escherichia coli marine bacteria of the genus Shewanella and the purple phototrophic bacteria, Rhodobacter sphaeroides and R. capsulatus.

A comparative study of trimethylamine-N-oxide biosynthesis
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, 1963A broad spectrum of species of plants and animals have been examined for their ability to convert trimethylamine to its N-oxide. Of the animal species studied, and under the conditions used in this investigation, trimethylamine-N-oxide synthesis from trimethylamine seems generally to be restricted to the vertebrates.

Circulation: Heart Failure
BACKGROUND: Growing evidence indicates that trimethylamine N-oxide, a gut microbial metabolite of dietary choline and carnitine, promotes both cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease risk.

Current Opinion in Lipidology, 2016
This article evaluates the link between trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) and bile acids and the consequent impact on the development of atherosclerosis.Elevation in plasma TMAO concentrations is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in many different patient cohorts.

Trimethylamine N-oxide impairs perfusion recovery after hindlimb ischemia
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2020The circulating level of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) has been reported to be associated with the prognosis of of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) patients. However, the effects of TMAO on neovascularization and perfusion recovery after PAD are not known.Unilateral hindlimb ischemia was generated in mice as experimental PAD model, TMAO or 3,3 ...

Ultraviolet absorption spectra of trimethylamine N-oxide
Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy, 1966Abstract Ultraviolet absorption spectra of trimethylamine N-oxide were recorded in several solvents, a band being found around 198 mμ with ϵ ≈ 2350 in acetonitrile solvent. However, in ethyl alcohol and in water this band undergoes a large blue shift and decreases in intensity.
