Trimethylamine N-Oxide (TMAO) as a Biomarker

2022
The interaction between diet, microbiome, and noncommunicable disease onset is gaining growing attention. The trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a gut microbiota derivative that has been suggested as a potential regulator of human health, especially (but not exclusively) for its association with cardiovascular diseases. It derives from the trimethylamine

Trimethylamine-N-oxide

Current Opinion in Lipidology, 2016
This article evaluates the link between trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) and bile acids and the consequent impact on the development of atherosclerosis.Elevation in plasma TMAO concentrations is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in many different patient cohorts.

Trimethylamine N-oxide impairs perfusion recovery after hindlimb ischemia

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2020
The circulating level of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) has been reported to be associated with the prognosis of of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) patients. However, the effects of TMAO on neovascularization and perfusion recovery after PAD are not known.Unilateral hindlimb ischemia was generated in mice as experimental PAD model, TMAO or 3,3 ...

Ultraviolet absorption spectra of trimethylamine N-oxide

Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy, 1966
Abstract Ultraviolet absorption spectra of trimethylamine N-oxide were recorded in several solvents, a band being found around 198 mμ with ϵ ≈ 2350 in acetonitrile solvent. However, in ethyl alcohol and in water this band undergoes a large blue shift and decreases in intensity.

Trimethylamine N-oxidation in Turkish women with bacterial vaginosis

Pharmacogenetics, 1996
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common cause of vaginal discharge in women of child-bearing age. A common symptom of this condition is a fishy-smelling vaginal discharge. Trimethylamine (TMA) is the substance which is primarily responsible for this distinctive odour.

Gut microbial metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide induces aortic dissection

Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology
Aortic dissection (AD) is the most catastrophic vascular disease with a high mortality rate. Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a gut microbial metabolite, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. However, the role of TMAO in AD and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
